07 W203 - twisted Body Shell ??

I think the chap is right, but surely factory quality control should have spotted it or even the dealer when they prepped it for handover.

When you get it back the back edge of the door should sit 1mm proud of the rear door, and the front wing should be 1mm proud of the front door

Though the car is quite new, if it is only the door that needs re hanging correctly It may need a new door seal as the door being in the incorrect place could have deformed the rubber seal, giving wind noise or allowing traffic noise to come in

Ah funny you should say that, as I also mentioned to them that the bottom seal wasn't right :) so they should sort that too. - We shall see !

Muppetz- I hope everything works out for you. When the checking is being done for twisted shell, insist that the rear seats are removed. Usually if these shells are twisted, then the panel behind the seat back will have a kink in it.

Perhaps the door has been badly danaged previously and it had to be removed for painting or replacement.

Does the paint look different in anyway ????????

The tell tale marks would be the bolts holding the hinges. the shells are painted with the doors on, so very easy to see

If the shell is twisted then you should find a slight raised bit of roof at the point that joins the front or rear windscreen. The door would also catch the body subject to the amount of twist. Are the shut lines at the rear of the door correct and what is the measurement on the leading edge of the door, top and bottom? Check the windscreen and the rear screen to see if there is any evidence of glass movement. I wish you luck and hope that the body is straight.

It's a bit alarmist of the bodyshop to say the shell is twisted if it turns out to be just a badly aligned door.

I while back I noticed the rear door on my W202 was misaligned. I spent the whole day trying to adjust the striker, latch and hinges having never done anything like this before. In the end I had to take both the front and rear doors off but only managed a slight improvement. It's not as easy as one might imagine. I have a feeling my car was never right from new.
Looking at the BMW TIS and running a depth gauge around the panel gaps it's clear BMW have tighter tolerances. Merc body shells are noted for their rigidity so it is disappointing Mercedes have such large shut lines. Hopefully Current Mercedes models are better in that respect. If you look at Jags or Lexus the gaps are wafer thin.
I doubt the shell itself is twisted but the wing and both doors might need alignment. If you change one thing the rest need doing.

I agree you have to know what you are looking at, and what you are doing, and I have done this work.

Earlier I said that looking at the bolts on the hinges would show if the car had been touched in this respect from the time it was a bare shell on the production line. If the bolts have spanner marks on them, then a new door or something has taken place, maybe a new door

Re car panels,do remember that the 202 is a 1995 motor car design and things have changed much since then. the gaps around the shuts on the new ones and my car are are as small as you can get

Hi Muppetz,
How are you getting on with this claim?

^^ Had no news, hence no post :)

After some poor service from the dealership (failure to organise things, changing their story on what might be wrong, not returning calls etc). I have now been told that the shell OF THE DOOR may be twisted.... and the car is being picked up on Wednesday, courtesy car delivered, and the car will be taken to the MB bodyshop in Leeds where they will attempt to fit an unpainted new door and see if that looks ok. If it doesn't then I am told they will then look at the rear door, as apparently that has an impact on the front... obviously if the new door does solve it then they will paint it up and fit it.

So Wednesday is the key day now, I shall report back their findings !

Just a little update on this. The car has been to the bodyshop (arranged by MB Harrogate) and had the door apparently adjusted. I *think* it still looks odd to me though... havent have chance or decent light to take pics to compare to the originals yet though.

I am due some new brake pads soon, and will book into MB Leeds where I bought the car to have those done. At that point (as they have much more stock) I will look at the car next to another one and make a judgement, if it still doesn't look right then I will see what Leeds will do with it :)

Thanks again to all for their advice so far ;)

Hi Muppetz,
I would be very tempted to get professional advice on this. Are you happy withthe car and can you still walk into the dealer and say you are rejecting the vehicle?

To me if it is not perfect, then it is not aceptable, and by driving it are you technically accepting the vehicle?

Regards
John

When the vehicle was returned (they collected it and brought it back) I specifically signed only to say that the vehicle was being returned, and not accepting the repair, pointed this out to the chappie, and kept a copy. So hopefully I have that covered ;)
