Can anyone tell me what E220 engines fitted to 124 estates are like, is it a good unit, and does it feel under powered:confused:
I have just spotted an immaculate one, I have had several of these but only with bigger engines.

They are a tad on the wheezy size TBH.

They do like a head gasket or two also.

There's actually nothing wrong with an E220 estate

There - I said it!

The 220 engine is coarse and unmusical but it's willing and the lack of weight in front of the front axle line makes a 220 much more agile on twisty roads than a 6-cylinder car

The biggest problem with E220s is that they are mainly owned by people who don't love them and who can't afford to maintain them properly

Is there much difference mpg wise between the 220 and 280

I think that I must be getting almost 30 mpg from my 280 driving it carefully

The 220 will be more economical in town & traffic and the 280 will be less economical when you boot it. On a long run at 70 mph I think you'll find very little in it

The big difference is that the E280 has torque and the E220 (and E300 Diesel) don't

I guess it depends on your expectations . The 16V 220 was the replacement for the 230TE : not a fast car but went well enough . While I have driven 230's , I have never tried a 220 but , on paper , it has a little more power so should go at least as well as a 230 .

If you buy the car you've seen , and decide you don't like it , I'm sure you can move it on without any financial loss - so why not give it a try ?

Great car. 270,000K plus on mine. Its my daily driver, my tow car, my 7 seater, my limo. Have not noticed it being underpowered. MPG, 28 around the town more on a run. Most of my driving is commuting so it does not stretch its legs to often. Kick down works fine when and need it with enough power to get me into or out of trouble!! Which do I take first my 190 or my 124. 124 wins it every time.

I love my 220 Estate!

I get about 30-35mpg (ish) on a run and it has IMHO enough poke. Quite quick actually.

I think it is fair to say that these cars are getting old now and as cars get older, they lose some of their power due to all manner of things like blocked air filter, incorrect mixture etc etc and I would say an in tune E220 would give a lazy E320 a very good run for its money, there wasnt much between them on paper from new anyway!!

Good Luck with the search,

Terry.

I drove a couple, and was impressed - not actually reallllly slow, just relaxed. Pressing the pedal to pull out of a junction was a bit nerve-wracking, other than that wasn't half bad - and the take-up on the 320 isn't exactly Lotus-like - there's a fair bit of weight to get moving.
Only when revved did I think it was a four cylinder - couldn't tell when cruising.
If I had the choice of a knackered rusty six or a perfectly tuned good condition four, both at similar money, I'd go with the smaller engine.
From what I've seen, condition is everything now on these I think, regardless of engine, not that I'm in any way an expert! Plus if you spend most of the time around town, the difference in mpg will be quite noticeable I reckon.

Thanks guys,
The body interior tyres etc are all excellent, however its done 139k with no service history and its white:(

So I'm not sure its worth £1000

I offered 1k for an M plate E200 Estate Dec 07, it went on to sell for 2k which was twice what the seller expected. Oh and the mileage 199k. If it's in a nice rust free condition with a long MOT and some tax than 1k sounds good.

the pedal on the right without any marks on it is the accelerator - it makes the car go faster if you push it down. :)

ps you are not a vicar or a nun are you?

It depends more on the condition and how it drives. If it drives well ie sweet engine, smooth gear changes no suspension clunks and rattles and the body is rust free and the interior is all good then it is worth at least 1k even if it is white and a 220. If on the other hand it is clunking, rusty and shabby interior just walk away.
