I've just bought a year 2000 W220, love it to bits already. :bannana:
There's been one problem that's developed as soon as I got the car.
The car was on 0 litres in the tank when I got it, but managed to drive 1.2 miles to the nearest petrol station, Texaco, filled up with a full tank, 81 litres for £77.
After waking up from my heart attack I set off, with in 100 yards, at a T junction the accelerator decided it would not give me any power for a good 3 seconds. I switched off the engine, then back on and it was fine, has been fine for the next 200 miles. I put it down to me not being 100% familiar with the car yet, so I wasn't giving it enough gas.
A few days ago, I was coming off the motorway after about 5 miles, had cruise control on doing 70 mph all the way, i came to the roundabout, cruise control switched off now, put my foot on the accelerator and waited a good 3 seconds before it kicked in, and boy did it kick in, felt like a kick down, just 3 seconds after i had asked it too.
I stopped off at a bus stop and reversed the car back and forth to try and mimic the problem. I found that as soon as i switched the engine off then back on, the problem disappeared.
This had happened again while out, been driving for 20 minutes, then accelerator pedal waits for 3 seconds before responding. Turn off engine, back on and it works fine.
Tonight, I turned on the Defrost button, and right away the accelerator did the 3 second lag again. A light bulb appears over my head, so I tested out the theory that the defrost button when it is pressed (switched on and left on, or switched on then off) might be the culprit. It is!
The defrost does work, the fan goes at full belt and damn the car gets hot inside quickly, but i have to switch the engine off then back on again afterwards.
Before I found out about the defrost button, i took the car to the Mercedes specialist I use to go to with my C-Class, he checked the computer's error codes, everything's clear, it wasn't doing the problem for him (or me that day either). It's definitely not the MAF sensor he's said, and that was replaced 13 months ago (before i got the car) anyway. Advice is "wait for it to get worse and it might produce an error code", which is understandable with intermittent problems.
Well, now I can duplicate the problem 100% of the time, I'll be ringing him up to ask for advice on how to fix it, but would like for anyone here to offer advice or experience if you've had the same problem please.
I can live without the defrost button, just switch it on before i start driving, problem solved, but is kind of inconvient and worrying that the fault might spread to another electronic switch.
