2007 CLS63 Torque Converter Failed!!!

So, just been in MB Macclesfield and have been told that the whole gearbox has failed. Going to need a new gearbox and torque converter and was presented with an estimate of £7k!!!!

They are going to see what kind of contribution they can get from Mercedes but I'm not holding my breath.

So to sum up:

Your car has full Mercedes service history.

It's been serviced on the button every year even if it technically didn't need it.

It was serviced by a Mercedes main dealer less than a thousand miles ago and part of that work was gearbox related.

You took out the Mercedes Tier One warranty at a cost of circa £1500.

I would hound them for 100% contribution and if they don't then you want a refund for the Tier One warranty.

Spot on!! I'm waiting to hear from them re contribution...this is the calm before the storm I suspect.

Can you cancel the tier one warranty and get a full refund?

Depending on what MB say and offer it will probably be much cheaper to source a 2nd hand gearbox and torque converter and fit that, although how reliable they are would remain be a potential issue. The issue with having MB carry out the work isn't so much the labour (£1200) but the parts as the gearbox is £3500 and the torque converter £900, add VAT and that's over £5k in those parts alone! Does anyone have any advice as to any other viable solutions?

I believe the technician said the oil pump in the gearbox failed which in turn caused a catastrophic failure to the gearbox internals. I have asked them to email me the itemised estimate and detail the cause of failure in an email. I haven't received it yet but will share it when I do but would such a failure also cause the tourque converter to fail?

Very sorry to hear of your issues, and something seems a miss here as these things don't usually fail like you have described. I would kick up a stick at the garage that did the original repair and with MB, you should get a healthy contribution towards this. Worst case there are many good techs here in the forum, more down south though and I see you are in the North.

I wish you a better 2017 and I'm sure you will enjoy the car eventually.

I'd get the car recovered to a decent inde instead, as JattAmg recommends above.

You might well find they can be reconditioned in any case - main dealers are notorious for throwing everything away and replacing with new regardless as it makes commercial sense for them to do so - but no sense at all for your wallet!

Given your location, I would have a word with MSL Performance in Brum...

This really sucks for you, I hope this is resolved to your satisfaction.

Personally I'd leave car with main dealership unti you hear back from Mercedes.

Sorry, I should clarify, I would get it recovered should any "good will" forthcoming make it financially uneconomical to get it done at MB.

MB Macclesfield have said they will get back to me tomorrow with a response from Mercedes so I won't take any action until then.

In the meantime I have emailed MSL in Birmingham and also a company called JT Automatics who offer rebuilt gearboxes and torque converters fitted for £2800 inc VAT and a 2 year warranty.

Thanks for the responses guys, i appreciate it!

MSL = recommended, you'll be in good hands, give Acid a call and have a chat with him.

You may not get a reply from your email. Best bet is to speak directly to Acid at MSL. 07765 44 44 47

I would keep pushing MB. As SPX has said earlier, it has been fully maintained within their network and has only covered 52k miles. Coupled with the fact it had some gearbox work done, there should be a substantial contribution from MB.

Go as high as you need to, although I imagine the car being off the road for a long period is going to be a pain

I can and will personally recommend JT Automatics in Erith Kent,

they are good guys and give a 2 year warranty,

make sure you speak with Robbie, hes the boss,

that said having read your post, I find it a bit hard to see how the gearbox failing would cause the engine to cut out whilst driving so I would be interested to know what makes the Merc dealer think its the transmission,
this info will also be very useful to who ever you get to rebuild your transmission, as a rule transmission shops dont like getting loose boxes as they like to run there own diagnostics before pulling the transmission out.

Moving it to another garage may not be a sensible solution as the gearbox has been removed and there will be a charge for their work done so far. Gearbox may have to be put back in before the car can be moved again so you could end up paying for the labour twice for the gearbox to be removed and reinstalled.

Did you sign a job card or authorise them to remove the gearbox?

cheers

Sorry to hear about your issue but to give you some hope,I went in to a MB dealer today about a minor issue on my S. (Window and mirror heaters not working) and one of their guys told me that the tier 1 has more exclusions than inclusions and that if you have an MB service book up to date and not more than 70k on the odo then you will be looked after. He also said that diagnostics were not included in tier 1 which makes it a poor warranty. I think you made the right move getting the refund. My MB warranty expires on the 28th Jan and I was going for tier 1 till he told me that.I hope you get sorted with 100% contribution.

There are definitely some good eggs in some main dealers!

I've known a few over the years.
