Hi, Odd one this, upon driving the car today I appear to be approximately 20 miles further to the east than I actually am.......unfortunately somewhere in North Stifford

I have tried turning off etc etc, even reset the Command/Radio but it still appears to be as good at map reading as my dear wife

Anyone had or heard of this before and knows a cure please?

Change the display to show the number of satellites that the system sees. My guess is its less than four or even zero.

It happens to mine occasionally, but it has always recovered its memory.

It's possible to tell it where it is from (I think) the setup menu.

I had the same problem, Alfie from Comand on line came out and changed the antenna total cost £100 and the sat nav was 100% again, I suggest you phone them up, they are the guys who are in the know.... regards Franklyn...

Yep no sats in the compass screen, looks like its fubar......

Anyone know where the antenna resides on a 2010 ML ?

Comand Nav

I have the latest DVD (Europe) installed on my W211 Estate but the Nav system is rather temperamental. It occasionally tells me that it can't read the disc. I am wondering if this is because the unit (in the boot) gets so very hot. Should it be getting really hot? If it is very hot then maybe the disc gets distorted. Anyone else got this issue? What is the solution? Cheers, David

The symptoms you describe sound very much like you have a copy disk not an original one. If it was from one of those sites selling them for circa £40 or less then its almost certainly a copy.

I would check this first as they make the drives run hotter due to numerous re-reads.

Fake & copied disks - Why you shouldnt use them

Thank you Alfie - it is so kind of you to reply. I am pretty sure that the disc is an original and not a copy but what you are suggesting does make sense.
A question - does the DVD reader switch off when you select Audio or is it still going in the background. If it is getting hot as I have found then switching it off should enable it to cool. I assume that by turning Comand off it will cool.
Oh - by the way, it is better at reading Map that Nav when it is hot. Nav is rubbish but Map works more often than not.

The disk wont be read much unless you are navigating. If you turn the comand off it will go to sleep. If you disconnect the power to the drive it will stop the whole in car telematics such as radio and phone from functioning.

Another option is that the lens in the DVD NAV drive is dirty, you can try one of those DVD cleaning disks but I had to open mine up and clean it manually. I did this early this year and it has worked flawlessly since.

Thanks SavMan - I did try a cleaning disk when this happened before. The idea of manual cleaning is scary. How do you do it? Regards, David

I only have mobile access and struggling to link the thread but here is the text from the post

Well I was just about to bite the bullet on a new DVD unit but was undecided on getting a used one off eBay for £200-300 or get a new one for 5 times that but have a decent warranty. Mine just stopped working suddenly and I tried several times with a DVD cleaner but no joy, decided I had nothing to lose so decided to strip it down to get access to the lens itself.
Getting the unit out is simple (I removed the fuse to DVD unit and the Comand head unit just to make sure there were no MOST errors after) there are just two clips one on each side, a stereo removing key is ideal but as you have fairly easy access I managed to just push them in by hand.
The unit slides out although it does need a little persuading. Once out there are three connectors at the rear that need to be unplugged.

There are no screws holding the unit together the top needs to be prised off with a small precision flat head screwdriver. I then removed the main cage with a precision screwdriver torx (4 bolts), there are 3 ribbon connectors that need to be pulled but they are the simple they have a tab at each end which secures the ribbon in place.
Then I removed the circuit board again held in pace with torx bolts (4 or 5 total) additional ribbons need to be removed.

This is where it gets tricky to get to the lens you need to remove it from the parallel bars it slides on, I worked out that the right bar has a torx secured tab holding it in place and then the bar can be slid out allowing the lens unit to be removed.

I then cleaned the lens with my camera lens cleaning fluid and brush and reassembled. Getting the parallel bars back in was the difficult part but finally worked out that with needle pliers and a 2mm flat head screwdriver used to pry up the base the bar finally went back in place.

Put the unit back in turned on and hey presto worked straight away, lets hope it lasts. All in it took about 45 mins total.

Crikey SavMan that does sound scary and I am not sure that I am going to attempt it. But thank you very much for the reply and for taking the trouble to find and share the post. Regards, David
