Does anyone have the tooling to hire to remove and renew the rear bearings in situ on the car,ie without removing the the bearing carrier,i am having problem with removing the the wheel hub thats pressed into the inner bearing race. Not to keen on removing all the suspension arms, plenty of posts on you tube showing tooling.
Any DIY advice would be appreciated.

Have you seen tooling for estate ?

On previous generation 124 the saloon and estate were different in that there was a tool for saloon, but not suitable for estate.

The estate bearing and hub needed to be removed and a press used.

You may want to check again knowing this info.

If the tooling is not available you will have to remove the hub assembly. It's heavy work but doable if you have a press.

Thanks, whats your opinion on using a slide hammer bolted to the hub to break out the hub from the inner bearing race with the bearing carrier in place,i believe i can remove and replace the bearings using a screwed bar to jack out and in once the hub is removed with bosses of similar diameter to the bearing bracing on the front and rear face of the bearing carrier.

i looked into all this recently on my 1994 W124 estate.

there was no way the hub was seperating from the bearing without a press.

by far the best way is to just remove the whole wheel carrier assembly and take it to a garage, along with a new bearing with a press and get them to fit it into the carrier "cash in hand". or if you are not DIY then take it to a local garage with a press.

later 210 may be easier to remove - i'm not sure..... i tried to remove the hub with a bearing puller but there was no way it was coming off. i doubt a slide hammer would be good enough either on the w124 estate....

i got bearing kits from Franey (Wunderpartz) on here and the local garage did the pressings for £30, and i re-assembled. they even torqued the hub nut up to 200nm at the same time (as i gave them the driveshafts too).

dont waste your time/money trying to remove in situ. the carrier comes off in 20 mins

Update finally changed rear bearing in situ on car, used a two piece bearing pull to break out the hub by placing behind and using wheel bolts to jack out increasing the movement with metal shims, although this ruined the brake back plate, screw jacked the wheel bearing out and in,found a you tube video for a similar configuration on a BMW that was easy to follow.
