300sl with a 3.6 AMG block

I think the Sutan of Brunei had one built with an E55 engine.

Oh , I like that ....

After my Euromillions win on friday , i shall buy that ... ;)

Interesting that it is built by HWA ( AMG in disguise ) and how well the late model AMG wheels suit the classic shape ...

Love the little updated details inside too , the steering wheel for example ...

Imagine how much fun you could have in that !!

I like the idea of updating classics with modern technology, but it has to be done subtly, engines, brakes, suspension and air conditioning, all that stuff is hidden from view but the modern wheels just look so wrong.

No !!!

They look great .... I'm the biggest advocate of keeping the correct period wheels on a car , which is why w124's and 126's look toilet with late model wheels on ...

I think the SL looks great with those AMG's , they're pretty nondescript anyway .... basic 5 spokes ...

I love that car , wish i knew how much it was ! :(

The Sultan's 300SL Gullwings, had W124 E60 AMG engines..

I knew it was something like that. I should have googled before posting.
More pictures
and a few more

Personally I don't like the wheels but I think the big V8 suits the car better than the 3.6. Wouldn't say no to either. :D

Engine bay looks so clean.
I was happy watching the OVP  ,God knows this part really drove me crazy few months ago.

Just took another look, the seats look too modern, the steering wheel looks too modern and the wheels just look wrong to me, personal opinion of course.

I feel if you're going to all the effort to recreate a car like that the modifications must at least be in keeping with the period of the car or it loses something.

None of this takes anything away from the fact that it is an excellent exercise in engineering though.

I have to agree, dont like the cheapo looking replica.. but the first one is still making me think about remortgaging... i mean its cheap at that price..

Which cheap looking replica ?

The one that is actually built by AMG , with the E60 engine ?

Yes, it looks like a kit car simply because there are certain parts that aesthetically don't look right, obviously the engineering is beyond question, but it matters not a jot if it doesn't look right.

I guess that HWA replica was made with the idea of being a "new" car. So replicate the shape of a Gullwing, but give it a modern twists of the fuel cap, door mirrors, and the later wheels (I would guess they couldn't use the originals because of the large brake from the E60 AMG).
I
like it because it's not an original, which has been butchered, but rather a new car built from scratch.
Interior is well done, too

Is it a replica ? .... it says 1954 ....

Actually I have to say I'd assumed they'd butchered an original.

Is this a ground up new build?
