I dont know if this is true in all the 55k engines, but it certainly is in mine. I cant rev it past 4,000 rpm when at standstill.

Is there any way of removing this limiter so it can rev more freely like a C63 etc etc.

Thanks

If "at a standstill", you mean in "park" or "neutral", than the 4000 RPM rev limit is by design.
No real reason to rev at high RPM "at a standstill" ;)

It's not unique to the M113K engines, many/most MB engines of this era are the same. It makes no difference when driving of course :-)

Why would you want to rev it past 4k when parked up ?

That's what Barry's do.

Stop's idiots when you are MOTing the car from revving it off the red line.

The quickest way to wreck an engine is to rev the tats off it when it's not under load. Hence why manufacturers would rather you didn't.

Well, thank you for the replies, though no one has actually answered the question.

I want to rev it past 4k coz i dont think it scares grannys and children that are walking past enough. Id really like to put the fear of God in them.

It revs past 4k in reverse - try it the next time you see a granny or child. :D

Just put in gear, they will be more scared if the tyres are spinning and chucking out a cloud of smoke! You may also find people get across Zebra crossings that bit quicker:D

But in all seriousness, If you where to sit revving the nuts off it, the first thing they think will probably not be about the size of your engine!!!

I don't think you can change it, it's a factory default you can't really change

What do you do on eg track day noise tests when you have to rev to 80% of maximum? Suppose the answer is don't take your S class merc!

To be honest every so often some one will come along and ask to hear how loud it is or what it sounds like in general. Without tear assing it around the local streets the only real way is to blip it up to 5-6k momentarily.

Problem is, it can sound a little gay when it cuts off at just 4k!!!

I wouldnt sit there and just rev the nuts off it for the sake it, but id like to be able to hear it growl properly once in a blue moon.

I can appreciate the manufacturers not wanting us to do it, but the C63's around here are able to do it, so it cant be that bad. Cant really speak for the E63/S63's of the same era. But people who buy this calibre of car are usually not known to just go and get loud exhausts and then sit there with high revs.

One of my T5 Volvos (modified) was auto, it also had a 4k soft cut limiter for P and N.

There was a way I could get it to really crackle, then pop and give a fair bit of flame, but this was only ever done in certain circumstances! (like when your mate is queuing behind you in the drive thru)

My 65 is limited to 2,000rpm at standstill.

All track days I went too, either in the CLK Black, or SL55 know that AMG's, don't rev past 4K in Park or Neutral, so they simply understand and measure the noise at that level. Never had an issue.
(It also means we get on the track with louder vehicles than most…. :thumb:
