560 sec head gasket failure?

cornershop,

I see you've posted the same thread here, on the legendary technical section of the official MB club & on MBOC (the TV forum).

Which forum was the most helpful?

P.S. Who do you look like?

Yes indeed, cast the net as far as I could without treading on US waters. Based on responses, has to be this one - did I do something wrong? Or is there rivalry between forums? I'm off to polish my SEC later so tell me if I'm banned from here :)

Fatlookalike ? Not sure anymore, used to be a fatter version of my brother, will give it some thought !

This was me relaxing at home earlier today in my loungewear (mix of Tom Selleck and BA Baracus ?)

Back OT, will take the 560 for a spin locally and see what it spurts out the back when up to temps (or not as the car may be).

Terry - will drop you a line to agree bringing it in

As above sounds like a stuck open thermostat might be causing the low temps which in turn could be causing it to run rich. I would suggest buying a genuine thermostat as the generic one I got caused my M116 to run hot. I also had to resolder the electrical connection

So took it for a spin tonight around the local 20-30mph streets, trying not to stray too far. It took 25 mins at these speeds with the OTG showing 13.5 degrees for the gauge to move off the 60 deg marker. It kind of clicked into the 70 deg area, but it caught my eye flicking back down to 60 deg, and then back up to 70 ish. So could be a combo of faulty stat and dodgy wiring. No smoke to report once parked up and idling so hopefully a simple repair.

The needle should move smoothly, mine was erratic before re-soldering. Also might be worth checking the viscous fan clutch isnt constantly engaged. A quick search should bring up how to test it

Ok so car dropped off at Bmerc in Barnet for further investigation. (chosen over WGMB for relative ease of access and equally good reviews - we will see). They concur that the t-stat is probably at fault causing the rich condition. Have a couple of issuettes to be investigated, hopefully back early next week.

Car returned (delivered) home today by the nice guys at BMerc. About to take it for a proper spin however a new tstat appears to have cured it - a short spin around the corner suggests it's less rich too which makes sense. A few other bits and bobs, including undoing some poor brake work by another local MB indie, new rocker cover gaskets, vbelts, exhaust rubbers and propshaft donut.

Good review for BMerc too - they're a busy outfit but everything sorted as requested.
