5k family classic?

In that case a Cortina Mk 1, Capri Mk 1 (facelift) or a Morris 1000. A friend at work has one of these, it has low miles, is unrestored and in lovely condition and only wants around £2,500.

i had a Mk1 Cortina and a MK1 Capri years ago, a 1500GT and 1600 respectively.

1500GT prices have gone through the roof but possibly a MK2 1600E?

i saw a 3.0 Mk1 Capri the other day, my wife loved it . .

Theres only one car that has built-in child seats so it would have to be that...

Plus these are only going up in value at the moment so you could own it for 2-3years and sell it for a profit.

tempting . . . didn`t realize they could be had for that now

They can, although this is pretty much the ropey end, but quite seriously if anything goes wrong you are going to be looking at serious bills.

944s are much simpler if you want to take a punt on Porsche re-pricing.

How about one of the last MK2 Golf GTI's? 5k would get you a cracking example and there's plenty of VW show events to go to.

I've just gone through the same process, apart from my wife agreeing with the purchase (small detail).

I too bought a 928, so glad to see another recommendation for one. Great 2+2 car, great community in the Porsche and 928 worlds.

This is mine, although an S4 will be slightly over your budget S2s are great cars and if you found one at the right price this time of year would be a good investment.

i have to wait a while for my 50th and i suspect they will be out of reach by then but i have to say, lovely looking car you have there

The prices are rising steadily and I think an S4 will be over 10k in 3 years - they've been too low for too long now. I'd take one for a test drive at minimum - they feel special, drive beautifully and have a very modern feeling driving experience.
As Charles pointed out there is potential for big bills but if you get a car properly inspected and save a war chest then they aren't that frightening to own. Make sure its had the water pump and pulleys changed reasonably recently or negotiate the price down accordingly, check everything works electrically, read the history carefully and take it for a good long test drive. As this ones been resprayed it should hopefully be extremely straight panel wise.

If contemplating a 928, tattoo this:
check everything works electrically,
on your forehead in reverse lettering and shave daily.

Opening a 928's glove box reveals this:

When that little lot plays up you'll rue Alan Turing being hounded to suicide.

the second i start thinking about newer/future classics that`s exactly the sort of thing that scares me to death and i start thinking about much older cars again . . .

It's a tough call but between rust and electrical woes. A solid car (if/when found) is a solid car. Electrics working one day is no guarantee that they will the next.
I'd steer clear of electrically complex cars unless they are still well supported by a good network of independents who offer proven, cost effective remedies.

Early canbus systems can be devastating when they fail. Those on the 8 series BMWs are ticking time bombs which BMW will quote you £4k plus for the parts alone.

The independents happily exist, but Porsche ones particularly know how to charge. A friend used to own one of Scotland's Porsche indies, each time I mention buying one he looks me up and down, pauses for effect and then in a Aberdonian accent that could cut granite tells me precisely what will go wrong and how much it will cost, and then recommends an 87 - 89 911 with the G50 gearbox as the only one to go for. So far it's worked!

Do you really want to be another Mr M. L. Crisis in a Porsche ?

These three will all be well under budget, are practical to own and run and will be fun to take to shows:

I think 5k right now would get you a nice SL500 R129 which would be a great car and probably a sound investment...

Sorry should have read it properly..you need 4 good seats:doh:
