5k family classic?

Yep! Stag V8 Longman tuned engine, flared arches, Stag brakes, Reccaro interior, electric windows and electric sunroof.

Sounds awesome, look forward to seeing some pictures. The was a 4x4 estate with a stag engine in a classic magazine recently lovely car

W126? They where built to a later date than the 123, but still feel like an old car (in a good way) That is, huge amounts of uncluttered room, wood and leather, a very upright windscreen angle and a funky wiper setup. Simple Luxury that you can drive all day in!

If someone was looking for a classic to take to shows at the weekend, I'm not sure that a W123, W124, W126 or w201 fit the bill even though all have been suggested here.

There is no single definition of a classic car, but I don't think that any of the above would be seen as classics beyond the world of MB enthusiasts.

At the risk of being seen as a heretic, there are far more rare, unusual and fun choices available than an 80s or 90s Mercedes.

There was. Belongs to my friend Mike, who lives about 25 miles away from me. Huge inspiration and assistance to me.

If you fancy looking at some pictures of my car, and the 4x4 one we have both been keeping running blogs of the rebuilds. The 4x4 is finished, but mine has taken a little longer (2 children and a house move in the middle!)

My blog is Alan's Triumph Related Blog! Start from December 2009 for the full story.

The 4x4 Estate is at Mike's Triumph Troubles and his starts about May 2009 and is the very start of his blog.

Enjoy!

I dunno, people like the old Mercs I think. When I got my barge at first it was just as a toy really, but even my non car friends said 'ooh a classic'.

I know what you mean, so personally I was surprised.

I get where you're coming from, although I think the W123 has reached classic status I do agree the rest may not be regarded as classics by the mainstream yet but can definitely see the W124 CE heading that way. I'm not looking to get something to show - just to enjoy with the family and if I wanted to go to a show it would be nice to go in a classic and involve the family. As my wife put it "you're always going on about old cars why don't you get one"

read both threads over the weekend, the idea of a 2500S or a PI really appeals . . .

there used to be a gorgeous 2500S in dark green i used to see everywhere when i was in my late teens, left a huge impression on me especially when the owner turned out to be a friend of a friend and i got a ride in it.

Definitely on the list if i could find one in good condition at the right price :thumb:

Put some triple side drafts on it and it will move - that and some 180B half shafts and you will have something quite nice. I have a brand new OD for one of those still in it's box.

Sigh.

The fuel injection system is just fine. In fact, its wonderful. Produces huge torque and power and gives a very snappy drive.
The twin carb model is ok, but not in the same league.
PI running issues, well yes, back in the 1970's when BL bought the system off Lucas but then neglected to tell anyone how to set it up!
We have had many many years experience of setting these up and getting them just right, and it is not an issue. I can set one up from scratch in about an hour, and that;s just at home in the garage with a set of feeler gauges!!
Why is it people say, ooooooohh, TR6, cracking engine, but the PI saloon, full of trouble. Same fecking engine!!!!

Anyway, the PI is incredibly sought after today and prices are rising fast. They are reliable and fairly economical and very easy to work on. Far cheaper to fix than a Mercedes !!!!! :-)

£3k - £4k buys you a really really nice one.

If they are still under £5k in 3 years I really could see myself in one, I suspect I will be going through your website a fair bit in the future ;-)

They are rising, so it won't be long before they are up in the region regularly. 10 years ago, the crusty one with a fresh MOT was £1000, that car is now £2000-3000.
Website is in the process of being rebuilt, newer, fresher with facebook and twitter feeds, so keep checking in. If you are near Ashbourne on Saturday 27th June, its our Club National and there will be about 50 -80 cars there!
