acer 5920 working fine, turned it off at night now will not turn on.
power supply ok,nothing on the laptop,no lights at all.
have we any members who fix laptops or can give advise.
ive tried remove/replace the battery and cmos battery but nothing.
any idea's anyone
its only been used on a table never on carpet or a bed so not overheated

oh and are you really bothered about fixing or just worried about data retrieval as the latter is probably very easy the former is probably a PITA.

unit is about 2 yrs old so no warranty
data not a problem as i can remove hdd and retrieve data

Is the power supply definitely 100% OK e.g. you tested output with a multimeter.

I had a similar problem a while back whereby battery had run down as power supply had gone west..

Try taking the battery out and run it off the mains to see if it works. My son had a similar problem and I'm busy racking my hungover brains as to the fix

If moonloops' and Harrythedog's suggestions don't work, and you're OK with retrieving data from the HDD, I would be inclined to write it off.
There are some very cheap laptop deals to be had these days, unless you want to make it the opportunity to indulge yourself, in which case go for a model with a solid state drive (mine boots in about 16 seconds).

tried another power supply so not that.tried removing the battery and using mains only, not that.as its been such a good laptop seems a shame to write off if its an easy fix

One more suggestion, which I resorted to a few years ago with a Vaio whose screen packed up, is to see if there's one of the same model going for spares on Ebay.
Laptops are notoriously proprietary so the scope for self-help is quite limited. Also assemblies tend to be quite fragile so it's rather too easy to **** things up just finding your way into the darker reaches.

For instance?

Please :D

Could be dry solder joint on the power jack in the laptop.
See if you can borrow a fully charged battery and try it.

If the power jack in faulty, they are not expesive to buy and solder in.

tried using a battery from the same model laptop with no luck also

i just thought it seems a waste to throw away i'll ebay i think as a faulty laptop

cheers all

This happened to my daughters HP laptop. No power up from mains or battery.

It turned out to be the actual power supply lead at the PC end had a broken wire. This meant that the battery was not charging so died. I assumed it was the plug on the laptop as I noticed that was loose. It was not and a DVM on the PSU confirmed loose wire. This is sealed lead so I bought another for nine pounds on e-bay. Problem sorted.

i tried a second charger, nothing.fitted a spare fully charged battery nothing

Here's a crazy but free suggestion that has cropped up a few times on IT forums. I've never had the need to try this myself, but if doesn't work you've lost nothing...

Unplug the power cable and remove the battery
hold laptop upside down with lid open (absolutely no idea why)
Depress the power button for 30 seconds
Insert known good battery
power on

at the worst, you'll wast 30 seconds and look a bit odd :-)

tried idea but nothing thanks
