Air Con not cold

Had my aircon serviced on Monday by Aircon Direct,on completion the guy got a reading of 5 degrees.I thought it would have been colder but he said it was about right for MB,gave the car a run out yesterday and I have to say I wasn't very impressed, anyone got any thoughts on this?

The MB system gets nowhere as cold as in our previous SAABs. I thought it was a fault when I bought our first but we have bought five MB's since (models years 2011 through to 2015) and they are all the same…or are they all faulty?

My AC was professionally vacuumed and regassed recently, and it's cold, perfectly adequate, but not as cold from the vents as some Fords we've had previously, which really were freezing from the vents.

I like to think it's because MB don't want air that cold that cool jets of it are uncomfortable, but maybe it's just not very good...

My aircon was serviced a few months ago.
It does not instantly cool the car, but after a few miles it does get cold,
and I have to gradually increase the temperature when it gets too cold.

I dont think modern MBs get as cold as some. The 124 gets much colder than any of the modern ones we have had

No system I've sampled is as cold as the old days when you could use R12.

And it didn't leak away so quickly...

Sadly, we have to be protected from ourselves and can't use it anymore.

5 degrees at the vent is fine.
Any colder and there is a potential for ice to form on the evaporator.

thanks for answer, It same with my air con problem

I had the wife's re gassed 4 weeks ago (s203) by a local garage £35.00 still ice cold, I was surprised as the garage guy said it had plenty of refrigerant in there, he hooked it up drained it, cleaned it and regassed. Bargain!

Used my own temperature probe and I get these results:

Father's W210 - 3-4c at the vent (owned from new, V reg and never re-gassed :D)
My W211 - 3.5-4.5c at the vent

With the climate system in diagnostic mode I checked the evaporator core temperature . On a hot sunny day, with a high cabin temperature initially, it runs at about 2c so I'd guess the temperature at the vent would be around 4c. At other times I've seen a core temperature of 5 or 6c.

Note that some recent cars have variable displacement compressors and the climate system will not over-cool the air as this means running the compressor at a higher setting and therefore using more energy, i.e. more fuel. So, unless it's really hot you may not get freezing cold air from the aircon.

As an aside, freezing cold air on your face/body isn't a good thing. On my CL the temperature of the air from the centre vents can be set differently from that of the other vents. You can get very cold air but if you set the centre vent temperature to AUTO (it has its own temperature selector) the system always raises the temperature of the air from the centre vents by a few degrees above cold.

I've just had mine emptied and re-gassed at Savoy tyres Autocenter in Hull. £35........nipples like javelins now :)

Thanks for the replies fellas, lots of words of wisdom there. It seems the general consensus of opinion is that 5c is cool so that'll do for me and besides, SWMBO reckons it's cold enough so happy days.

Next time you get an A/C coolant top up ask them to dye it with UV.

That way if you ever doubt performance you can go under the car with a UV light and check for coolant leakage.
