Can someone please help me on how to remove and replace my Air Filters on this engine? Iv seen how to remove the middle black air pipe but the side black boxes which hold the filters look squeezed into the sides? View attachment 39212 View attachment 39213

I'm sorted now thanks anyway guys!

On this engine you have to tell the ECU that the air filters have been changed if i'm correct. It has to be done through STAR.

Yes the filter adaptation has to be reset. Failing to do so could bring on the mil light[/QUOTE

Is that TRUE? I wasn't aware of that?

Hi,
I didn't see a response to your question.
I know there are two filters, one on each side. They are housed in a plastic cover with 4 torx bolts.
You need a t-25 torx bit, male.

I can get 3 out of 4 torx bits out on the passenger side of the engine filter housing but how do you get the fourth one out?
Also, the picture attachments that were posted are no longer there.

I also know my MIL may come up if I don't get the new filter adapted:(

One bolt remains on the filter box after its loosened,I think it's a safety feature so the bolt does not fall behind the engine. On my 642 I didn't get an EML light after the change but got it plugged on star and it showed as filters blocked so had it reset for £20. I had a pdf on how to do these air filters I'll try see if I can find them

I find strange that the ecu can detect that the air filters are clogged, but can not detect that they are not and have been replaced, or does it apply an adaption to the the fuel mixture over a set period of time starting from when the service assyt is reset. Seems like another MB service feature designed to keep star owners in business!

I thought the very same thing. Strangely I didn't get a EML after I replaced the air filters but got it on STAR anyway for a reset as advised and SURPRISE SURPRISE it showed as air filter clogged! How it knew iv no idea but to be fair the ones I took out were badly dirty and clogged up

It is not merely the ECU detecting whether the filters are blocked is it!...the MAF will determine how much volume of air is passed so that is proof to the ECU that they are indeed clogged!

I never had the engine light up...

When i bought my motor it already had two new air filters in and done only about 500mls and was fitted by a non Mercedes dealer...

I drove about 116mls home and also 60 mls to Maidstone to have my ATF changed and while there the airfilters were removed for proof of newness and went on Star to adapt them and on the way home, 60mls again, the improvement was really , really noticeable........so i believe it is not just for a reset of miles for when to renew....it did make hell of a difference to mine...but then not all engines are the same are they?
