Has anyone stripped alloys of paint/lacquer at home? Any recommendations on what is good? I have a polished set that need the lacquer removing, sanding down to remove the imperfections and then polish it back up to a nice shiney wheel and finally re-seal them.

I read quite a lot of people have used Nitromors, mixed results. Some say it's changed over the years and is not as good anymore.

Its OK and come in thick or thin versions. Thick is best as it stays where you put it. Do you really want to do it yourself? Normally I grudge paying any one for something I can do myself but have just had a wheel re-finished and it was not at all expensive.

Living in the WMids B'ham is close by and there are a lot of wheel refurbishment companies there at competitive prices (for painted wheels) so this is my fall back plan.

I always like to have a go myself if it can be done, I know it will take me a long time but time is something I have in abundance at the moment and saving the cash is a bonus :thumb:

Might be an idea to price up all the materials you need and then compare the price to get it done by a specialist company, then be honest with yourself about how good the DIY result will be.

It'll cost a lot more to buy the materials and then have to pay someone to fix what you've done.

Not saying you can't do a good job, but cost of materials can be surprisingly high if you don't have them already.

Thanks for the replies, me being me decided to give it a go and so far I am happy with the results. Will update this thread properly once I have finished one completely.

One other question, what paint/ finish is used on the inside of an alloy wheel? One was in very poor condition and so has had the paint stripped and cleaned up. I won't make it perfect as there is no need but it will be a lot better than it was.
