Just a quick one,

I have replaced my ageing sony cd/tuner unit with an Alpine cd/tuner.

With the Sony, the antenna only came up when tuner was selected and stayed down whilst listening to cd.

However, with the Alpine, as soon as the stereo is turned on the antenna comes up, regardless whether you are listening to tuner or cd.

Is this normal operation for Alpine head units ??

Doesn't help you, but on my SL the Kenwood head unit does exactly this. As soon as the unit is on, the aerial raises, regardless of what you are listening to....

this is normally the case nowadays on most headunits.

It all depends on the make/brand of the stereo - Pioneers do exactly the same as soon as the head unit is powered on. Back in 1999 had replaced the OEM factory Blaupunkt head unit in a W126 - The Blaupunk unit too would acivate the electric aerial when powered on.

You could always interrupt the wire from the back of the ISO.

I saw a kit for volvos that even had a factory-style button to do this very job! IIRC someone on another forum bought the volvo kit and swapped the button for an oem MB button (they found one that had an icon on it that looked a bit like an aerial or something). With the button pressed the aerial would go down regardless of headunit activity, so CD/DVD/TV/NAV or even radio broadcasts if you live in a great signal area would be possible with the aerial retracted.

Darned if I can find the kit through google though.

Thanks guys for your quick replies - as always ...

Will just have to clean the darn thing more often now I guess !!

May try searching for theat interruption gadget.....
