AMG E500 ... thoughts please!

Hmm, it looks alright to me cleanliness-wise?

It's not an E500 btw!

The engine on top is a little bit dirty but the interior looks OK.

Price-wise it is in the right ball park but it is getting on for moon mileage.

You need to make sure the airmatic suspension works ok - raise and lower the car, try it on different suspension settings (all done near the gearstick lever).

It should pull like a rocket and all the electrics should work.

I would check the service history out as well... and get the car inspected by a good inde...

ooops! didn't mean to type 500!

I thought it looked clean in the pics!!

Mileage is and isn't the problem to me......or should it be??

To me a 147K well looked after car is better than a badly looked after 80K car??

Or am I better twiddling my thumbs and watching ads??

Still undecided on a 320, 500 but WOULD LOVE AN AMG!

Anyone any thoughts on running costs??

I'm not expecting silly MPG, etc but doing I guess 10, 000 miles a year I'm pondering!

250K + maybe!!

looks quite grubby.

I think Simon means the engine, have a look at the engine picture, signs of oil leaks maybe. I'd want to know more about that....

My tuppence-worth...

Estates are more sought after than saloons. It looks ok to me, but photos can be deceptive. It might be nicer than it appears, or may need a good scrub. If you like the look of it, give it a test run. It's a lot of car for under £10k.

MPG - after a year in mine it's averaged 15. That's mainly town driving, so help me god, and when I do get out to better roads, it's having moderate fun. Managed 24mpg on an 80 mile round trip with 4-up and a bootful of heavy luggage for the first leg (taking friends to airport), and a bit of spirited driving on the second leg.

Ad says it's a one owner car, with full MBSH. 147k is reflected in the price, and wouldn't bother me if it's been looked after and runs true. Doesn't have all the toys, but you don't want an E55k for the extra rinky-dinks really.

FWIW, I'd have had a look at it if I hadn't found mine.

Good luck :)

Two thirds of the way there nearly is getting on for 240k to me - each to their own!

I agree with your stance on preferring a mint well-looked after 147k than a shabby 80k for sure - but come re-sale, you will get clobbered for the mileage - so you have to clobber at buying accordingly!

People's perception doesn't always match up to the reality. I bought a 124,000 K reg 325i once and drove like a dream. I did nothing to it apart from get the gearbox bolts tightened because it was starting to leak - and that was it until I traded it in at 140,000 a year later.

I think if your heart is in it and you have the opportunity, you may as well.

I don't believe now a year of running an E55K vs. E500 would yield massive differences in most costs. The expensive bits are the AMG bits but these cars are very well engineered.

Some on here have had issues, some less so. None are without issue but luck and service history etc. will play a part.

I would drive one and see what you think...

Bank on 18mpg in your calculations. I do around 8000 miles a year and spend around £250/£300 a month on fuel - with some spirited driving and some not. I managed to get it down to 11mpg when I first got it but I have too much mechanical sympathy to drive a car hard all the time. You don't need to anyway. Moderate acceleration eats most things.

I mentioned that in line 3 of my post?

Couldn't agree more. I had a couple of issues with mine but the issues were not AMG-specific, just general MB gremlins.

As John says, take it for a spin. Here is an old report, make of it what you will. I didn't write it :)

Mercedes E55 AMG Review | Autocar

I didn't have smile wrinkles before I got mine, albeit a saloon. I do now :D
