Another 500E

I had a European 500E and just prior to me buying the car the harness went and fried the coil packs, harness and ECU's....cost of replacement £3500+

Vlad, how do I check this? Can I do it myself. What would be the cost of preventative repair?

Many thanks,

UC

Replacement of upper and lower wiring harness' is very straightforward....but check the condition of your existing harness before replacement.

Remove the airbox and check the harness that is visible - by the injectors, throttle body etc...check for cracks and splits in the wiring...the harness gets brittle from age and engine heat, so no big surprise.

The harness' are very approx 300gbp each.

There are some fol who think these cars run hotter than other V8's...in my experience, certainly not the case. With a correctly funcitonal rad, thermostat and good catalytic converter, these cars will run at a steady 90degC, even on the hottest summer day with AC running, it will barely get above 100. Both my 500E's run this way.

Snap, mine is the same.

Dave!

It's just struck me how many 500E/E500 owners we have here on the forum now.

Off the top of my head:

Talbir x 2!
Paddy
Mr. Motul
Pupsi
Uberwagon
Uchiha

Possibly (probably!) others that I've forgotton.

Quite a number, considering that these were pretty rare cars :)

how i dream to own a E500! I know i'll have one of these one day. I've seen a minter on the german ebay which I have my eye on.. im still saving!

Uchiha, i think MrMotul (Terry) was the first uk owner of your 500E and afaik he imported the car himself. i also think it was the first of 5 that he's owned. i'm sure he would be happy to give you more info. excellent choice by the way.

Yes, Terry Upton owned that 500E (Reg: B10 UPO) - Very beautiful car in awesome condition with some RARE options (electric speedo etc).

Well done on the car - its a beautiful car - Much better than the E500 I had back in 2005.

We'd love to see photos!

Definitely, I've never seen another one on the road.

Dave!

Nor me...i've seen one other parked at MB Great West Road (where i get all my parts) but never on the road.....a convoy of these would be an absolute blast ! Anytime i take my 500E to MB Great West Road, the parts guys are always coming out to take a look at the car !

Okay figured out how to post photos.

Thanks for the advice, Talbir - i'll take a look at the harness as soon as I can. I agree that we should definitely meet up at some point. One of the main reasons I had a bad feeling after I purchased the 500E was I felt a little alone after sampling the (very) high quality of the M5board and then jumping ship but I'm glad there are a few of us here.

Today I spent about 2 hours cleaning the drivers side door. I was concerned about the rust dots you see below the rubber strip but these came off nicely and the metal work is looking good (on the driver door only at this point). Cleaning this car is going to take a LONG time but I'm really enjoying it as I'm getting to know the car. Also spent a couple of hours on the interior vacuuming, and wiping down surfaces, getting all of the gunge out of the nooks and crannies and generally removing 16 years of other peoples hair and dead skin cells. It'll take me several weeks. Although the car looks clean in the Avantgarde photos, believe me, it was very very dirty. The plan was to post before and after pics but the camera went missing somewhere along the way and by that time I lost interest.

Cleaning a car for the first time is always scary for me. You get to see the flaws you didn't pick up on when buying - thankfully for me, these were few and far between but there were a few rust spots which I wasn't expecting. I'm going to see how to go about getting this seen to.

I've attached the second photo as I need some advice. For some reason the grey strip of cloth below the boot carpet is soaking wet (the boot carpet is wet too). I'm not sure if water is leaking from above or below. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I'm going to post my initial thoughts on the car tomorrow at work ;)

There are 4 places from where water can leak - the rear windscreen, the rear lights (including number plate lights), the bootseal and the bootlid handle.

I'd remove the carpets and then hose the back of the car) and then open bootlid to see where water is dripping from . Once water gets in from any point, the condensation usually forms on the bootlid, slowly making the whole carpet wet.

Probably a good time to renew the seals on the trunk, number plate lights, taillights etc. The seals will cost approx 70 gbp in total (boot seal is the main cost) but all are very DIY jobs, very straightforward. The seals on these cars are now circa 15 years old, so not undue for renewal.

Also check if the bootlid sits even and correctly when shut, that all gaps are equal....very easy to adjust via the 4 allen bolts on the hinges to re-align. Teh bootlid must sit evenly and tight against the seal to avoid leakage.

There's not much one can put wrong with these 500e's - they are near bulletproof. Even the front wings seem to be longer lasting than the standard w124 counterparts, always seen as a weak point for corrosion.

It's also worth checking that when the boot locks in place that the striker plate is not slightly loose.

At high speed my rear interior light flashed when I first got the car, I found out it was due to the boot opening ever so slightly from a vacuum affect on the bootlid. One loose striker plate was letting it shift about. Very strange.

Dave!
