Anyone else got W211 E class auto gearbox problems?

What is the mileage on the car? You are past the age of cars which were affected with the glycol contamination.

I would suggest its to do with the gearbox oil level being low. Has it ever had a gearbox service? Its probably around the time for when its due any way.
Hi

It has done 54,000 miles now.

thanks for the heads up on the glycol contamination (even though it's past cars that were effected...)

Not sure about a gearbox service... have been in touch with Mercedes Ipswich; they are having it in for a look see on this friday.
i'm a newbie to mercs, diesels and automatics, so all the homework i can do before then will probably stand me in good stead!
the car still has a year's warranty on it through Mercedes direct)
cheers!

At 54,000 miles it is a bit overdue for a gearbox service. This involves draining all the old oil out, replacing the gearbox filter and refilling with new fluid to exactly the correct level.

At first MB claimed its sealed for life but it isn't. They even have a service interval for this job now.

Finally i would recommend you go to a good indy who knows what they are doing etc and also it will cost a lot less. I only say this as some dealers do not change the oil properly, they will just drop the sump and drain whats in there and refill. This leaves half of the old fluid still in the gearbox. I dont know if this will affect any terms of your warranty (using an indy) so i will leave this up to you.

thanks again momomo!

i will let you know what comes of the dealership visit on friday...

Jerking and limp mode in my case was related to engine mounts... Changed the mounts... Back to normal...

Hi guys, just to update you all;

MB had the car for an hour a couple of days ago, and gave it back saying there was a 'back-pressure' error code that had now been reset and all should now be well.
Lo and behold; the car has done the same twice since; and is booked to go back in a week...
I have also noticed the following since my last visit to MB...
1. the car now revs a lot further before changing gear (makes a lot of noise and higher revs but the pickup is slower)
2. The brakes seem a little bit sluggish.
... hmm makes you wonder exactly what they have adjusted?!

i got in contact with the previous owner who said the only problem he had with the car was that the gearbox seemed not to change gears fast enough and the car revved a lot with not much acceleration... (seems like thats what i have got now...) and MB had re-progammed the gearbox.

aloha all...

just had my E280 CDI back.

MB diagnosed it as a faulty turbo charger, and have changed it under warranty.

so, fingers crossed!!

How can a faulty Turbo cause gearbox issues?

I was told that the turbo had a manufacturing flaw and when it intermittently malfunctioned (during rapid acceleration from slow speeds) it caused various sensors to pick up different readings and eventually caused the gearbox to 'get confused' and hunt for the right gear; thereby causing the experienced short duration shuddering as if the gearbox was struggling to find the right gear.
... reads like a sherlock holmes special, I know... but that's the way it's been explained to me :)

Moreover.... the problem seems sorted
now!
... fingers crossed!
;-)

e320 (211)

Thats a very General Statement, when you only talk of a problem with your gearbox.

I personally have had no problem with my E320 CDI and nobody else to my knowledge has reported gearbox troubles on a W211?????
Hi folks i have e320 auto cdi which giving me gearbox problems its like driving over a catttle grid at certain speeds took to mercedes and had it taking for a test drive mec said quietly tor converters are starting to give bother on o4 model etc i have only 82k on the car.( help please).

2003 E 270 Cdi Gearbox twitchy

I have recently purchased a 2003 E270 cdi with 2 main dealer 4 Specialist Stamps and 76 k miles, to replace the W210 220 cdi which was to leggy & oxidising like hell ,
when hot and in heavy traffic stop start etc...20-30 mph gear box seams twitchy C/S button make no difference to me either, engine seams to rev high when pulling away etc.. could this be box oil change required or ecu fault etc... I have been assured from specialist in scotland the gear box rad has been change which was a common fault

i am senisitive to this the w210 i parted with box needed re-conditioning due to incorrect servicing at about 165 k  and want to nip the w211 in the bud

can anyone advise on these symptoms before i go to specialist etc...

thanks

you need to do a test of the g/box oil to see if it has antifreeze in it 1 of the 2 types of radiators had a problem with the glycol leaking into the g/box via the g/box oil cooler. The glycol then attacked the plates in the torque converter which gives a vibration up hills.Fit a torque converter bypass the g/box oil cooler for a independent cooler and use the proper oil

Hi all.

Two questions;

1. How does one start a new thread? i have scoured the menu; and cant find a button for it...

2. My 280 CDI has been behaving well.... Apart from a distinct lag when accelerating while already in motion. Took it in to MB Ipswich; who did some 'software upgrades' and it seems a bit better.
not quite sure what causes this (feels almost like turbo lag as when you put your foot down; it takes a few seconds to actually start the car moving faster...)
I am taking it for it's C service in 10 days and they will have a look at the acceleration issue again; but was wondering if you folks might have any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

There was a thread about this lag, but I can't find it at the moment. It's down to the gearbox 'learning' your driving style - it gets used to pootling along at 30mph and selects as high a gear as possible, in order to save fuel. Press the loud pedal and the gearbox needs to move down a gear or two before the engine can respond. Ask your dealer to reset the gearbox adaptation and see what difference it makes.

Thanks for that!

Thanks,

Will organise to get test at Indi garage i use for servicing, whats the worst case
can it be rectified or new box/rebuild required etc.... as ive been here before with
knakered boxes on my previous W210

Cheers

I have a E270 cdi 2003 with ongoing gearbox problems. I had a 2k bill to replace the Torque Converter, now just 3 months later having a vibration coming from the gearbox, is seems to be Intermittent. Just can't put my finger on it but something not right. Gear changes seem too soon when cold, then settles down. My head is in my hands as have a high trim model with 20k of extra's and I feel there's too much to go wrong. I got an engine amber light come up but went away, now a brake services light. I wont get through the winter so am trading the car and getting a Honda CR-V, I really need a car I can depend on again. Have spent over 3k on repairs since bought the car 6 months ago. I miss the over enginering days of W210. I'll just have to cut my loses now. Lets face it, the W211 is a lemon.
