Hi All,

I ordered some brake pads from an ebay shop and they turned out to asbestos brake pads!

I thought it was illegal to sell asbestos pads, in the listing it didnt mention it.

Are ebay shops bound by the same conditions as regular shops?

Any thoughts?

According to the HSE:

"The supply, possession for supply and fitting of asbestos products to motor vehicle, trailers etc is now banned"

So I should really ask for a full refund and send the pads back?

Are you sure they are not marked as "asbestos free"?

If they do contain asbestos then they must be very old, what brand are they?

Post the link if you can.

looks like new old stock Motaquip package

At £4.99?? Gotta be asbestos !

Simply use them. The type of asbestos in these pads is not the dangerous type and may well be less harmful to you that what is found in todays asbestos free brake pads.

I would have thought that they would have to state that they are asbestos pads or would ebay not allow them to sell them if they stated that?

I need to send them back anyway as my pads are a different size to those ones. which I found out after wrestling with some rusted pins.

My pads are the shape below as opposed to the ones in the pic

Motaquip is a budget aftermarket brand ( used to be seen in petrol stations in the days when they would major on car parts rather than selling groceries ) , probably nowadays sold through motor factors and the like , and more a brand that I might fit to something like a run down Triumph Herald than a Mercedes-Benz .

They certainly are not OEM .

If you want 'proper' brake pads , look to the likes of ATE , Pagid or Textar .

I wouldn't fit Motorcraft parts to a Merc either !

I know its not something that should be done but Im trying to run this car on a budget as I bought it cheap from ebay, something I wont be doing again.

I am justifying it as I think think this car has been mostly neglected by the last few owners and what ever I do will ensure it carries on for a bit longer.

Slowly working my way through things that should be have been done but clearly havent been done in a long while. Changed the ATF/filter which came out mostly black, same deal with the master cylinder/ brake fluid. The other fluids look pretty old and will be changed.

I also need to change the chain guides as they were a dark brown which from what I have read means they should be due a change.

Im thinking of buying a decent W126 in a few months time and will buy "proper" parts for that. Until then this is getting brought back to proper running order on a budget.

Its also got some chinese ditch finder tyres on it so Im not sure I would be able to harness the benefits of decent pads

Like Derek, I wouldn't fit those!!

It's OK running a car on a budget but when it comes to brakes you simply can't cut corners.

I'm unemployed at the moment but I still save up and buy the best for my car. It's a classic merc and it deserves the best. I respect the car and all the history that comes with it and feel it deserves to be maintained to the same high standard of which it has been in the past. And when it comes to safety items you simply can not cut corners.

Bin them and buy some quality ones.

Stwat I understand what you are saying but my car is very different to yours.

It has little to no history and from what I can see from the work that I have done so far it has not been maintained to the standard it deserved.

To bring it up to the standard that it deserves would cost more than the price of a W126 in grade A condition. The way I see it is if I can bring it up to good running order by using affordable parts I will have kept a car on the road that would otherwise have been broken.

Also as I said the car currently has cheap chinese tyres on it so even if I put premium pads on it I wouldn't be able to harness the extra braking power available. With my cars/motorbikes/ MTB I usually research the pads I am buying extensively but that because I have usually bought the best rubber I can and will be able to benefit from the quality those pads will give me

I concede that the worst case scenario is that cheap pad will overheat and become less effective over repeated hard stops or even possibly break up but I dont think this is the type of vehicle where I will be driving like that.

They are going back as they dont fit but Im not sure what pads I will be fitting as I also need new discs as these have also been neglected. I have fitted a brand new Pagid master cylinder as this is one area where I didnt want to skimp!

I thought that was strange as we only list 1 set which looks nothing like those at £4.99

Ours are below:

Pagid Front Brake Pads:
Web Price: £24.60
Forum Price: £17.22

These actually work out CHEAPER than the unbranded set on eBay, and these are Pagid so quality isn't a worry!

You don't have to cut corners to save money!

Thanks for that Pat I have already ordered and fitted the Pagid master cylinder from ECP which works a treat. I think the old original was past its sell by date at 29 years old!

Need a set of discs as well as Im sure they are decades old as well!
