Attitudes to drivers of certain make cars!

I do find that when driving my GF's focus that people are less likely to let me change lane on the motorway to overtake and more likely to harrass me when I'm overtaking something.

When I think about it this makes sense because while overtaking on the motorway I make a snap decision as whether I should let someone in front of me based on the type of car and their "body language" and am less forgiving of "slower" looking cars. Ultimately I don't want to have to slow down too much from my cruising speed and a "capable" looking car is probably going to keep pace with me.

You can say what you like about BMW and Audi drivers being aggressive but fast drivers don't tend to hold you up too much...

One of the best experiences I had was when we got one of the first New Beetles in the country. Never had a problem getting out of a junction; did have a problem fighting off the admiring hordes. I'll never forget a pals wife's face when we pulled up at a swish restaurant and the £15k VW was surrounded and her £150k+ Aston was totally ignored!

I had a bmw 330ci Convertible before my current ML

It was a difficult choice at the time due to the BM image (and I had a Z3 a few years earlier) but the 3 series just seems to get a real negative image. Generally its 318's all de badged thinking they are in M3's...

The 330 was actually a very good car, lots of toys, Good performance and I thought it looked nice.

It did seem to attract boy racers following you very close behind though..

Funny in the ML this never happends, probably as it has very dark (factory) tints and its a big bus that people cannot see who is driving or how many on board.

I do think you will like the ML

So whats wrong with being aggressive?

One thing I have noticed is the way people treat me differently when I'm driving the little van. Everybody seems hell bent on overtaking me but when I'm in the LWB Shogun nobody cuts me up, ever. It's very noticable and weird really.

Try a Porsche, every Vectra/Mondeo muppet wants to race you and nobody will ever let you out.

Try an old Porsche.
Everyone, and I do mean everyone, lets you out when you're in this;

 That would be mine, cheers!

From my observation, more of the based models (such as A/B/C-class, 1/3-Series, Polo/Golf, Corsa/Astra, Fiesta/Focus, Aston V8) are badly driven than the top end models (such as CL/S-class, 7/8-series, Phaeton, Omega, Scorpio, DB9/DBS).

I wonder whether those who haven't made it has something to prove on the road whereas those who have made it are more dignified.

When I use my S-class or Griffith, I sometime get picked for a race or tail-gated as I am quite a young driver for these cars. I just won't have any of it and will cruise at 5 mph less than speed limit for them to get ahead. When the NSL sign arrive and condition allows, I will just cruise pass them when they are not concentrated as most I find just don't have the observation or skill to keep their car on the road on country lanes and motorway.

Also, I found those who speed or tail-gate often have poor limit-point analysis skill.

Try a shiny blue Volvo XC70 estate at 69 mph with Cruise control on the M25....many people slow right down and then just creep passed me...wierd.....

Really interesting reading all the posts, one thing that was noticeable that I don't know if anyone else here found was that when I drove a Mercedes or any other make car, BMW drivers rarely let me pull out which to be honest made me think rather negative things specifically aimed at BMW drivers, but driving a BMW most of them let me pull out which I was surprised.

Also interesting that people say about in 4X4's people not giving road rage as my sister has a Discovery series 3 with tinted back windows and never gets any road rage, and she is a cr*p driver. I also think that people will be less confident to slam there breaks on at 70mph in front of a heavy 4X4 than a 3 series.

Lastly, I personally found the people on the BMW forum completely different to this one, and am counting the days to pick my car up so I can be officially back in the MB Club :)

Oh and thanks as well for all the positive comments about how I will love the ML, you really confirmed that I really did make the right choice:bannana:

That old Porshce and tasty 190e - Parked in a rather nice Crescent in W9, if I'm not mistaken

Which BMW forum where you on, as I used to me on one with my vert,

This one is MUCH better (and the cars nice too)

Agree with N/B's posts on here. And that Porsche is sublime! :thumb:

I have recent personal experience of people trying to steam-roller me (needlessly) out of the outside lane of the M1 when I was passing other traffic - at 85+mph - on both occasions by young male racing reps in Skoda TDI's. Definitely a case of feeling inadequate and needing to prove a point. Yes, everyone already knows the Skoda TDI is the fastest production car ever. Pr1cks!!

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I well remember an occasion a few years ago when out in my old E-Type when a chap stopped abruptly half way round a roundabout (stopping all the other traffic as well) to let me on in front of him! What a gent!

Yep. Me too.

In a previous life I used to commute up the Old Kent Road daily in a Volvo 240 estate and everybody kept well out of my way. I used to put it down to the girders that car used for bumpers; but the reputation they had for being driven by visually impaired old buffers was probably closer to the real reason. Of course, on the days when I used the significant other's 2CV the world was a very different place...

I've various experiences of this. When I used to have a CLK, I found a bit of aggression from just about any other car driver, especially when trying to enter main roads from side roads! But, in my S211, I don't really have any issues at all. In my Saab, with the roof UP, I get no negative reactions, but with the roof DOWN, here comes the aggression!!! Why?? Strange isn't it!

As I drive a variety of Classic Car Club cars, the different reactions to the cars is quite amusing. The older the car, the better the treatment generally, usually a wave or knod of approval, but never agrression. The newer cars, expecially Beemers (Z4, 730, X5 etc) always get negativity and a tendency to try to block or prevent any manouevers that might allow me and my demon Beemer to gain any advantage over the other drivers... Sad..

I had complete reverse experiences in my current and just got rid of Smart car.
In my S/L 500 people are a lot less aggressive on the Motorways and A roads, they never race me or get in the way/slow down and then speed away, they also move into the middle lane without any prompting when i am overtaking.
On normal roads i dont get let out from side roads and find people get right up my **** when im doing street speeds.
In the Smart car the agression from other drivers is the exact opposite in the same situations.
