Hi All,

Have just got a CL600 in, i drove it away from where i bought it (sold as seen) and would not shift out of first (or second) gear. The winter/summer switch does nothing either.

Its a 2000 CL600.

Now what i have found so far:

1) The driver side carpet is alightly burnt and lifting it shows that the huge wiring loom may have been damaged somewhat, it seems to have been repaired.
2)The passenger side carpet is wet, have taken it out to dry, this may just be related to a valet though

Does anyone have any ideas where i should start.

Obviously tomorrow i will check all those wires properly, but this may not even be related...

Does limp home mode cause the car not to change gear?

Wet passenger carpets CAN relate to blocked drainholes or leaking interior heater radiator but hopefully not in this case.
Electrical fire in loom sounds interesting on a Y2K car:crazy:

Hi yes the engine revs normally right up to the end... im going to have a look at the wiring today, not holding much hope though..

The gear box ECU normally sits just to the left of the gearshift in passenger footwell.

Make sure all the connections to the electrical components malcolm has pointed out are dry and correctly fitted.
take them off and spray some switch cleaner on them and fit them back making sure they are not loose.
Jay i had similar issues with my SL320 and turned out to be a loose connection, I think you may know Santok on Lythalls lane take it there or call them and ask them to do a diagnostics on it with the star if they can get a hold of it.
It may point you in the right direction..

Good Luck

Raj

Rajinder, do you know where the loose connection was?

I have checked all the wires where the small burn was and all seem ok...

Im going to have a look at the connections at the gearbox this afternoon.

On Monday i think i will take it to santok for a start as its down the road and i can drive the car there...

If santok has no luck ill get it up to Ian Walker, the only problem being that he is so far away...

Jay,
If you look under the passenger side footwell, pull the carpet up. There will be a plastic cover, i think its 2 10 mil's undo them remove the cover and under there ther is i think 2-3 ECU type units, 1 of them is for the gearbox i thibk its ESG ( electronic sequential Gearbox ) there are plug in sockets, and it was one of them that was loose.
I think you can pull them off, ( there may be a clip if i recall correctly push the clip or clasp type thing up which releases the plug) just spray some good switch cleaner in there, if your are ther you might as well do the others too, maybe even the main ecu... i done all mine when i had the problem. i used some stuff from maplins at gallegher retail park was £4-£5 i think, i have some here if you need.... i dont think i am too far from you, (if your in nuneaton) im in Exhall..

If you go to Santoks, call him today and tell him you need the satr machine so that he can get craig to make arrangements for it.

Sounds like it is the drain holes as suggested. Was the last service done at MB? They are meant to do a fix now to stop it happening. I caught mine just in time by fluke, took it in and they said any more water and it would have damaged ther mass of wires under the footwell

Hi Rajinder, I found some crontrol units under the boneet and one of thse looks like it had been out recently, cleaned those but no joy, will look in passenger footwell now..

Rang santok, but he wasnt in, got some other guy, didnt really sound very knowledgable!

Nothing in the passenger footwell, removed the metal plae and nothing behind it! I think ill have to leave it until monday to put it on the computer and see what that says...

Jay, It sounds as if the gearbox ECU is either not recieving power, not recieving CAN signals or is fried.
The box will go forwards and backwards but not change gear.
The wiring loom sounds interesting and may have shorted the ECU.

I hope you got it cheap.

Jay,
Get it on the Star machine it will at least tell you wher you need to look, as Ian says it could be any one of the things mentioned, star should give you a rough idea as to what is causing it, if its a CAN fault they are a nightmare to trace, as this is what used to show on mine, CAN communication fault from the transmission control unit. As there are so many CAN connections its a right pain in the back side, and most mechanics dont want to touch it.
It took me 3 months to sort out and that was when i first got the car too.... I hope its a easy fix.. if you cant get anyone to sort it i have the number of a guy who works at Merc and he was the one who sorted mine out in the end, he uses santoks garage and is freinds with craig who works there st santoks..,
Give me a shout if you need his details.

Cheers Rajinder, i may well need some help on this...

Dieselman - no it wasnt cheap and ive not slept for 2 nights because of this, I have built Mercland on my own savings rather than a bank loan and so things like this just hurt that bit more...
i bought it because its quite a unique car but dont usually buy anything worth above 15K. It has the complete lorinser treatment from new so im just hoping i can recoupe the costs now due to it being special...

Malcolm- its difficult to tell but i think thats the unit i was messing with last night, its located in one of the fuse boxes. I removed it and it looks as if someone had already had a go at cleaning the contacts as one of them was covered in oil.

Tomorrow i will take it to Santok in coventry (in first gear, that should be fun), plug it in and see what he says. If it points to the control unit i guess ill have to bite the bullet and get a new one. It would be nice to try another one first to ensure thats the problem but not quite sure where i could borrow one from!

Anyway, thanks all for the help so far...

On the plus side, the car is amazing, i just love all the toys, i watched eastenders in it last night!

What a great looking car. Do you think its the same car Jay?

Thats the car!! I rang him and he's 'sold' it!

Well it will be advertised for quite a bit less than that once i get it up to scratch!

EDIT: Just spoke to the guy, nice chap, he wreckons that he was getting this problem intermittently and MB cardiff diagnosed it as a speed sensor on one of the wheels? Doesnt sound right to me?!
Anyway, he took it back to the auction and they refunded him as the auction had failed to disclose it was imported from new.

I have no such get out clause as it was clear that it was imported from new on the sale catalogue!

Apparently he was standing next to me at the auction when i bought it! Cheers mate!!
