Autobox wont change gear on CL - HELP!

Just a couple of things, dont know what car it is 215376 or 378.

Is the oil around the ECU transmission fluid, as there has been issues wher the oil has leaked into the wiring harness and ECU, with this fault a modified seal and wiring harness solves the problem. MB say that the ECU has to be replaced, this is not the case as test done by me on another forum showed where I filled up a SKY box with oil and it still worked and that is far more sensitive than your ECU.

Looking at the diagrams, yes the wheel speed sensor all come into this ECU.

I feel sure that the fault read out will solve the problem. keep us up to date on whats going on, as I follow this type of fault with great interest.

Yes ive exhuasted my self with wiggling wires and checking connections... tomorrow will hopefully yield some results...

Malcolm: Its item number 320066480320

Did you know the car was faulty when you purchased it? Surely it must have had some kind of warranty or as described sale?

As a general rule of thumb, if its a V12 and it has probs, steer well away!

Funny enough there was a CL600 on ebay 6 months back, had suffered water damage, looks familiar to the one on ebay. Had gearbox and suspension issues if i remember correctly and damage to the loom in the footwell. Sold for £15kish.

No I had no idea of any faults, however most cars are 'sold as seen.' They dont generally take anything back based on electrical problems, only if there is a problem with mileage, history(hpi) or accident damage.

You are making me feel a lot better Nav!! (not)

I dont think there is any sign of water damage...

Sorry!

On another note i would be tempted to take it to MB. Forum member aka$h had probs on his S320 CDI, it went to specialist after specialist who changed approx £3-4k of parts, but the prob stayed. Ended up going to MB, resolved it within days for under £1k.

Jay, why no cut your losses and stick it back into the auctions in a couple of weeks time and if possible use a different auction location/company

A very valid comment Vlad.

Well if possible id rather sort the problem out because the car is amazing in every other way...

I think this is a bit early for this, though we do not know the price paid it is a dream car to own. When Rajinder bought his car it had this fault on the box that MB could not find nor fix. I helped him alot, though it went into some 100 threads of info the problem got fixed for very little cost and no parts. It threw up loads of stupid fault codes around everything other than the box, finally we got it down to the CAN bus with poor connections to the gearbox ECU, this is all easy to check.

Found something else, you have an electronic gear shift module within the gear shift, any water here would give problems.

give me your Email address and I will send it to you,it could be handy for the guys doing the test.

The central gateway control module is under the A pillar drivers side, this is where all of the Can signals meet.

Your LH SAM unit is near bulkhead left hand side.

Ignore the one on the right, that is for Air Con etc.

Ignore the rear SAM,thats only for interiour comfort and lamps.

The CAN connectors for the box ECU are pins 40 and 41
(120Ω)

The ECU contains, RPM sensor 1 & 2,modulating pressure, shift pressure, oil temperture, torque converter lock up. its all protected by fuse 37

Malcolm

Thanks Malcolm, ive checked all the fuses, i think 37 is a 15A and is ok.. they are not all numbered so its hard to tell!

pm me your email - i have already pdf'd a copy to help out a member on another forum - it's an odd size so doesn't pdf well but you'll get the whole document

Jay,

If i can say, you have a good guys on your side on this forum, Malcolm, and Navs both helped me out loads with faults on my car.
Make sure that santoks has got the star machine there before you drive there as they get it of another guy.
PM me i will give you some details on other local guys that may be of interest.

Ive had a lot of problems on the S320cdi recently mostly electrical. Except the engine its mechanically and electronically the same car. I have 2 things to say.

There is a gearbox control unit in the engine bay, on the s-class when removed oil poured out of it, after which the board inside the gearbox was changed and the loom, cost was around £1500 by a specialist.

I had major power issues with the car which 2 specialists tried to cure, the car spent over 3 months off the road and in the end I had just had enough. It went to MB, £900 later the car was up and running, moral of that story is take the car to MB. I dont want to mention names but even one of the best specialists couldnt get close to resolving the issue.

Hope its not too much money to fix, great looking car! Which auction did you get it from?

Regards

Hi Akash,
I hear what you are saying, but MB aint always right. What they tend to do is replace everything. For example if your electric seat stops working they wont mess about finding out what is wrong and which component needs replacing they will replace everything.
Thing is yes it resolves the issue but they charge you for everything including £100 p/h labour....
I think its give and take and dependent on problem.... MB want the car in and out asap...
