Automatic insurance renewal....

I have just had this with more than. Have had to send them a copy of my new ploicy before they will do the refund.I have also double checked last years docs and no mention of auto renewal on there. However on my van policy it clearly states auto renewal no less than four different times in the docs.

They are at it and it's widely known that high premium renewals are sent out to trap the lazy.

Tell them you are rejecting their offer and to process your refund immediately. Inform your card provider and claim that they have taken funds without your consent and you want immediate refunding. Go upline if necessary.

The minute that a price changes, any renewal is subject to acceptance.

in my case it was with Aviva, but no i had not recieved any renewal or any contact from them.

they say i need to tell them my policy number of the new insurer so they can check on the database to see if its insured, if it is they will refund.

On the face of it I would be iritated by them demanded to know your new insurance details, but I suppose they want to satisfy themselves that they weren't at risk during that persiod - it's possible that a claim could be made at some point in the future.

It's very odd that you didn't get any paperwork. You should have had the renewal notification and then the confirmation of renewal. That seems to be a failure of your insurers system, or perhaps the Royal Mail (although I don't believe the Royal Mail is as unreliable as some people suggest).

Opinions on auto-renewal seem very polarised - a recent discussion on PistonHeads about it got very heated. I think it's a good thing - who know, you could be laid up in hospital come renewal time and your missus gets done for no-insurance on her way to visit you!

What I do is when I get the renewal notification is to check for competitive premiums, then call my insurer and tell them I don't want to renew. I get put through to "retentions" and they generally come up with a suitable cost to keep me. With LV= this year however, all the checks I made came up dearer than the renewal, so I just let it go through.

Which is worse, auto renewal, or no insurance because you thought it would be automatic, or just plain forgot and it wasn't auto renewal?

Either way, what has happened to people being on the ball?

If people can't fathom out simple paperwork exercises such as insurance they shouldn't be allowed out of their house IMHO ;)

You paid for a period with an expiry date - usually a minute after midnight.

Any accident after that time is of no consequence to them. There is no claim and nobody in the world could ever convince me that any insurance company comply to a code of ethics.

Auto-renewal is a scam and a practice to catch the stupid.

Insurance companies are lower than **** on a snake.

It is not just this matter of auto renewal , but the asking for new insurance details before they will refund that is wrong .

Although continuous insurance is imminent , it is still no business of the insurance company whether or not you have insured elsewhere , or with whom - ALL THEY NEED TO KNOW IS THAT YOU HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO RENEW WITH THEM .

My understanding is that the new rules will be administered by DVLA comparing VED/SORN records on their computer with MIB database and issuing fines much as they do for SORN breaks . It is NOT the job of insurance companies to administer this .

I am currently insured with Aviva , methinks I'll tell my bank shortly before renewal date that no payment to them will be authorised without my express permission .

As LTD says , if the price has changed , they MUST allow you an opportunity to accept or decline .

They do. Something has gone in the communication of that in the OPs case, but, no problem, they'll refund him anyway.

It's understandable from the insurance companies point of view that they would ask from proof of other insurance. You may have been planning on selling the car, leaving the country etc etc and so just used auto-renewal to keep you covered and then cancelled it when needed. Or, as mentioned earlier, a claim to could come to light at some point - having two policies running complicates things as liability has to be shared.

Ok, there are some people for whom mis-fueling their cars, getting nicked for speeding or forgetting to renew their insurance is just never going to happen as they're too clever. For the rest of us, auto-renewal is a valuable fail-safe.

OK, just phoned and cancelled it and they are refunding the £295.00 in full.

i was a bit annoyed at the following;

- to do the refund they wanted me to verify the last digits of the card. i said i dont know what card they took it from as i didnt authorise it, but still, i got lucky 1st card and it was the right one.

- the premium last year was £230.00(ish). Thats a price increase without any authorisation from me

- i didnt recieve any renewal paperwork prior to the renewal to authorise it or not authorise it.

- even though they took £295 of my money almost 1 month ago, i have not recieved any new insurance certificate for the new term

Lets hope when i check my bank balance that they do not apply any "admin charges" to cancel....

EDIT: Bank statement checked - £295 was taken out by Aviva.... lets see if £295 goes back in. The guy on the phone said it would, so hopefully thats the end to the matter.

Auto renewal is fine; IF its done by all companies. Some do it, some dont = hassle for the customer.

Did they explain the lack of paperwork at all, or do they just think they've sent it?

i didnt question it to be honest; but i did say that was the reason i didnt renew when they asked why i'd gone elsewhere. but they didnt sound surprised or said i should of recieved anything...

I told them the same, as well as the ridiculous wait whilst insuring a temporary car.

They said they were getting rid of it so be interesting to see whether that was bull or not although I wont be making that mistake again so doesn't really matter to me.
