Becker Map Pilot 2.0.49 Upgrade

Full postcode search is very annoying now, takes 3 times as long.

And she said therefore a number of times today after my 400 mile round trip. And says Waaartford instead of Watford.

To be honest I cannot see anything that's been improved.

I get Waaartford also, always raises a chuckle. Reigate comes out as Rheagate.

Plus I had the Portuguese issue on loading too.

Fed up with the postcode issue now.

I have just sent another service request to Becker to roll back this functionality to how it was in version 49. I can't believe the functionality of the software would go backwards with each release.

I have also suggested they have a team of users in each country who carry out software testing prioir to any full release. Standard procedure for anyone in the Software Development circles. Will see how that goes down!

Hi
Am I the only one that gets truncated guidance messages? For example ''turn left onto the A FTwenty'' rather than A Fourtwenty. Abidon rather than Abingdon. This has been the case for me in all issues of software. I have raised it with Becker but no action seems to be planned.
Cheers

I wish i'd read this site before i tried to update my Map Pilot. It currently has no maps installed and V2 of the software. downloaded the free map update twice and it says initializing, then absolutely nothing happens.

unhappy and very disappointed at the moment!

This is weird. After doing the update last week it wouldn't read out traffic alerts and only minimal info displayed on the screen.

This morning when I left home it showed a message that said loading map, please wait. Not seen that before. And now the alerts are being spoken and the display is full with incidents. Also the triangle alert in the bottom of the screen now flicks between normal and with the grey symbol showing it was being updated.

The unit has not been removed from the car or updated. Somehow it has sorted itself. Anyone else had this after the update?

Finally read the whole thread and now I can update to new version since they sorted TMC issue. I will keep backup of course :-) Thanks for helpful posts and being beta testers ;-)

finally up and running after a month

Some observations for the benefit of others who may hit similar problems.

The latest software did function on my 4gb unit but it had loaded a half-baked version that just displayed white roads that floated against a pale blue background, no other features like green areas or water etc.
(If you have this - no, it is not becker's new minimalist look but a ****-up of its software installation over the older versions.)

The directions worked fine. PTT voice recognition was 'not available in GB' and greyed out on the menu. After becker corrected the TMC issue that worked again. A final push involving pestering the dealer and phone calls to becker did not really solve things. I opted to do a fresh install on another pc - I did not delete anything off the unit.

Luckily I remembered my username/password for the content manager.

Downloaded everything again - The fresh install rebuilt the 'library' which took some time and also installed a newer version of 'global european resources' than the one the unit was using. It actually seemed to release more space on the unit - I now have uk, germany, netherlands and france all loaded so that will do me.

It all works well now and I think the voice recognition (which I use a lot) is better than before. Driving through Leeds the main buildings were all displayed in 3D - but obviously more memory hogging maps now.

Can't say becker or MB dealers came out of this fiasco with much credit - neither seemed up to speed with the problems unfolding.

Becker's latest newsletter urges upgrading your software/maps just before you go on your jolly holidays - I think many will have a different view after recent events - play safe and upgrade about a month before you travel - then there's a chance to fix it and you won't be the butt of the jokes when you have to rely on the trusty old Tom-Tom again.

I upgraded the Map Pilot to 2.0.51 version and everything went ok. I assume that 3D city views are only for specific cities? I don't drive into central London but I hope to see it working in Berlin.

I miss one thing in this GPS device, it's not showing my current speed so I can't use it to measure max speed. I will have to take my old Garmin to Germany. I don't believe in values showed by the speedo.

Hey Red_220,

I updated to v2 without restoring beforehand and I can only get access to -46 maps.

In post #291, are you in fact 'downgrading' to v1.5.12 and then upgrading to v2?
Could pass along the file "service.apd" that you got from Becker in post #291?

I'd like to downgrade to a version where I could use the maps

Thanks in advance

I just got my new C Class Coupe and Becker at the weekend and updated the Becker yesterday (with reservations after adding this thread) ... I thought it all worked but I see this morning I appear to have the minimalist view of the maps.

When you say you downloaded everything again, do you just mean plugged into the pc, fired up content manager and went though the 'purchase' process again or did you have to do something else like uninstall previous versions etc?

Any help appreciated.

I used a laptop initially for my mappilot but after downloading various versions of content manager and maps I suspect it was a ragbag of various files and it was only loading the floating white road version. It worked but it wasn't displaying other features, e.g green A road boxes, railway lines, lakes - driving by the coast there is no sea or edge etc. no green spaces shown. (all appear now after fresh install)

I was going to fully uninstall the software from the laptop (there is and uninstall button in the folder where the files are stored, when it runs it puts up a window to select what to uninstall i.e. choose uninstall the library as well as the other files). If you have the 1 pc then that's what you would need to try. The library and european resources seem a major part of the problem.

Having messed around for a month I decided to use a second computer at home that had never been used with the mappilot.

I logged onto the becker website at the new computer, went to the downloads section and installed content manager, connected the unit and put in my user name and password , it knew who I was it allowed me to 'buy' the maps again onto the second PC and clearly was doing a different sort of install, loading the library and global european resources - I went to the various sections in the content manager and any files on the left I selected to transfer over to the unit ( I unticked the 'select all' box in the maps, this is automatically selected by the download even though all the maps won't fit on a 4gb unit) If you have just got the car make sure you have an 8gb unit!

The unit took the files no problem and and since it has been displaying everything as it should.

Update issue same experience

Received the following email at 23:53pm yesterday - they work late!

I have yet to try this - will give it a shot when I get time tomorrow.

Thank you for your e-mail. We are sorry to hear that you are encountering inconveniences while using your Becker MAP PILOT navigation system.

Regarding your query, in order to sort out your inconvenience, we kindly ask you to follow the steps indicated below:

- Disconnect the Becker MAP PILOT.

- Uninstall the Becker Content Manager making sure that you will also delete the Library and reinstall it once more by downloading it from our official web site Harman Becker MapPilot .

- Close the Becker Content Manager program.

- Connect the Becker MAP PILOT.

- Open the Explorer and delete all files and folders except the files "device.sig" and "device.xml" on the Becker MAP PILOT.

- Create a folder named "APD" on the Becker MAP PILOT.

- Save the attached file "service.apd" in the new created folder "APD".

- Start the Becker Content Manager program.

- Click on Buy (if necessary enter the login data - the same as in the web shop).

- Buy the software update (for free).

- The download includes now the SW 2.0.51 and the European map package.

- After finishing the downloads the packages are extracted on the Library.

It is possible to have displayed a warning of not enough memory. In this case, after performing the above mentioned steps, we kindly ask you to access the Becker Content Manager, in the field Manage -- Managing Data -- Organizing Map Data and deactivate the Select all function. Afterwards, you should install the new content in the Managing software tab and Organizing Other Content, in this precise order. The last step would be to install on the unit as many maps as the memory allows you to in the Organizing Map Data tab.

Please be informed that after the download, since the new map package contains an increased amount of information, you will not be able to store all the maps on the unit. Therefore, we advise you to keep on the unit the maps that you are frequently using and on the PC the rest of them, being able at any time to move the ones from the PC onto the unit when finding it necessary.

In what concerns your questions about the 45 days, we would like to inform you that after analyzing your information, it resulted that you have exceeded the time frame.

We hope we have been helpful with the information above and we are at your entire disposal for further assistance.
Hi, Can you confirm if "service.apd" was a file becker sent you ? Was it specific to your case you raised ? Can you share this file ?

Rgs, CarpNGolfMB

Hi guys. I've had similar problems. Tried updating the Becker unit and had nothing but problems since. Now my car doesn't even recognise it. Taking it back to my Mercedes garage. If they can't resolve it they have said they will replace the unit as under warranty

Hello again
I am still suffering with truncated commands from the unit. (e.g 'F' instead of Four)
Sometimes it is impossible to understand the directions and thank goodness road numbers are displayed.
Becker refuse to give a definitive ''yes'' or ''no'' answer to the question is it a software bug.
Does anyone else have this problem?
I am waiting for my dealer to let me borrow another unit to try out. I have a 4Gb unit.

Mine appears to be OK now, it appears the one mistake I made was not to remove all of the old maps from the unit before doing the update (although nothing indicated that I really needed to do this !!!) ... spoke to Becker and they sent me a mail basically outlining the process to uninstall content manager, re-install and re-download all maps etc.

This worked and all seems OK ... caveat is that I only took a short drive after the update before I had to head off on a work trip. I'll be home on Friday and will test a bit more over the weekend.

Thanks everyone on this thread fro input etc ... I may be back :dk:

Have got same problems after updating, followed Beckers fix instructions which took hours only to get an error message.
I have asked them to supply an address I can send unit to for them to fix.
Still awaiting a reply
I don't expect a premier car manufacturer to use sub standard suppliers.

Sounds like its when we have all tried to update the units they have gone crazy. Doubt I will try and update again when I EVENTUALLY get it sorted :/

I have updated everything and so far it seems OK with everything working I think as it should, except the volume of the radio or music that is playing doesn't go down during navigation instructions. Should this work or not? I have been into the system settings on the car and the fade on navigation command box is ticked. I have also downloaded the European danger spots and that also seems OK as it is warning of speed cameras

the music should go down during instructions.

It sounds like I'm in a similar situation - I did exactly the same updates but I also updated the firmware before adding the Euro danger spots. Everything appeared to update successfully but now the volume of the announcements is barely audible compared to the radio or music playing and there's certainly no fading taking place.

It was all okay before the update so I suspect a firmware problem - does anyone know if Becker have a Tech support team that you can email?
