finally up and running after a month
Some observations for the benefit of others who may hit similar problems.
The latest software did function on my 4gb unit but it had loaded a half-baked version that just displayed white roads that floated against a pale blue background, no other features like green areas or water etc.
(If you have this - no, it is not becker's new minimalist look but a ****-up of its software installation over the older versions.)
The directions worked fine. PTT voice recognition was 'not available in GB' and greyed out on the menu. After becker corrected the TMC issue that worked again. A final push involving pestering the dealer and phone calls to becker did not really solve things. I opted to do a fresh install on another pc - I did not delete anything off the unit.
Luckily I remembered my username/password for the content manager.
Downloaded everything again - The fresh install rebuilt the 'library' which took some time and also installed a newer version of 'global european resources' than the one the unit was using. It actually seemed to release more space on the unit - I now have uk, germany, netherlands and france all loaded so that will do me.
It all works well now and I think the voice recognition (which I use a lot) is better than before. Driving through Leeds the main buildings were all displayed in 3D - but obviously more memory hogging maps now.
Can't say becker or MB dealers came out of this fiasco with much credit - neither seemed up to speed with the problems unfolding.
Becker's latest newsletter urges upgrading your software/maps just before you go on your jolly holidays - I think many will have a different view after recent events - play safe and upgrade about a month before you travel - then there's a chance to fix it and you won't be the butt of the jokes when you have to rely on the trusty old Tom-Tom again.
