My Mate Dave thinks I should get a speed camera warner, just in case, now that some police forces are using unmarked camera vans. HADECS installations stick out like sore thumbs, but unmarked vans are another matter, and I may occasionally inadvertently exceed the limit a little where it's safe to do so on a quiet motorway, so I think he's right.

The ML only has an NTG2.5 COMAND, so afaik there's no way I can add speed camera data to that. I'd prefer not to stick something on top of the dashboard, so perhaps an app for my iPhone 5S would do the trick. I know very little about this sort of kit - I'm quite happy with the NTG2.5 satnav, which tells you all you need to know about my level of eletronic tech savvy... - but I gather you can get apps that are updated by subscribers whenever they spot an unknown camera location, which would seem to fit the bill. Alternatively, can you use a navigation app for this purpose?

Does anybody have any recommendations?

The Waze App on your smartphone should do the trick.

Google Maps or Waze on your phone will warn of fixed cameras and some frequently used mobile camera sites. Both are completely free and I think have the option to report new cameras.
I can’t get on with Waze which makes me a big fan of Google Maps. Is their an audible warning on GM?

I’m getting close to 12 points.

There definitely used to be a 'bong' alert but not 100% sure it's still there in the latest version.

I also much prefer GM to Waze, in general.

Ooono works beautifully. No need to have your phone out. Visual and audible alerts, tap to report, tap to acknowledge. Very good.

My two pennorth; Waze every time, no req to have a destination, it just works all the time, predictably (unlike Google. and bang up to date. always.

As I recall the big benefit of Waze is the much larger number of users reporting things in real-time (like mobile cameras).

There's a new type of mobile speed camera used in Central London (and possibly in other places?), essentially it's a man-height tripod with what seems like a normal DSLR camera, at least in terms of shape and size, mounted on it, and on top of it another small device which I guess is a traditional Doppler-effect laser speed detector, except that it's quite small. It's operated by a single police officer wearing a yellow hi-viz, and from a distance you could easily mistake it for a surveyor taking measurements with a Theodolite. You won't be stopped on the spot, instead - if speeding - you'll get e NIP in the post, similar to fixed speed cameras. Not sure how you can get alerts for these - the ones in our area are usually deployed between 8am and 9am, presumably catching people on the school run or late to work, but this time frame is probably too short to show up on the likes of Waze.

EDIT:

I guess it's not that new:

spot on, the real time user info about incidents/road closures/mobile cameras/Police is invaluable

Is this just a one-off purchase cost or is there an ongoing subscription??
One of purchase. I’ve found it to be very reliable. Battery life is incredible. There’s no screen, it’s almost invisible in the car, and being a single large button it’s much easier to report new and acknowledge existing cameras and hazards than touching a small button on a phone screen.

Ooono is currently £62.99 at Amazon with 10% off but the price goes up and down (as is the case for most things on Amazon).

Maybe not for the OP who prefers not to have anything on the dashboard, but a used tomtom satnav is a cost effective solution. Buy one with free lifetime map and speed camera updates.

Tomtom also offer their speed camera database as a free phone app which is fine provided you have sufficient free data on your phone.

The Camera van operators use Waze while they're working.
It's so good and up to date, when they see themselves appear, they move.
I'm not joking, Waze is the best thing, and free.
If you set it up to see other Waze uses, you see 1000s of them.
All with access to pinpoint a Police car or Mobile van, with the quick, and legal press of a touchscreen.
Without Waze I would have been banned years ago.
Occasionally it's impossible to see a hidden van, but Waze user coming in the opposite direction, who can see them, flag them up.
Win, win.

+1 driving without Waze running feels like driving naked. 🤣🤣🤣

Yes I have one of those ... they stopped doing lifetime free updates a while back and I keep getting offered big discounts on a current model which just happen to have an annual subscription for map and speed camera updates :D

Didn't know that, might have a look.
