Billy's W124 Coupe Project

I do think however taking into account 50-60kg of extra engine weight and heavy leccy seats our compressed length would need to be looked into closely and considered to be an important factor- as mentioned tryingto keep the spring travel similar to what it is now. I like to feel the the road if that makes sense?!

Hi Chap

I was waiting for a few calls and got bored so decided to do some maths..live life on the edge...he he!!

this is your corner weight data, your total is 3165LBS

billycornerweights.jpg

I believe the Kerb weight for a 320ce is approx 3285LBS (perhaps a 320ce owner could confirm this)

difference of 120LBS or 54.5Kgs

Do you remember if we took photos of your old springs VS test springs??

Haven't checked my external hardrive yet...but I'm pretty sure its full of filth..lol

Top Man Maz, i'm glad you kept this, I was wondering if you gave it me or not last time i was around. I was refering to this in my last post of having this sort of data handy to help us out.

So, 54kg's is not a lot of difference :thumb: But how do we think the springs we have at the moment will fair with this + extra weight of say a passenger add another 70-80kg on top...?

I think we did take a photo but i can take another one if you want to see it I've got it in the garage...

Yep that's the plan. Once the car is done, taking into account the extra weight of all the options like the leccy seats etc we can then go ahead and get the springs done. From the data collected previously it shoudn't be too far off the basic info we have to work with.

I'd like to be in keeping with the similar spring rate and travel to the ones we're trying at the moment.

If i remember correctly the spring rate of the ones i have is around 7.9kg/mm. Compare this to the rate of a stock spring of 5kg/mm that's quite a bit of extra capable load bearing that these can handle! I'm impressed with them considering they are only 300mm in free length Vs. 3.70 stock. Can't remember the compressed length though :o

Wouldn't powered seats you are going to fit add another 40/50 pounds to the curb weight? Those things are heavy

Yes found that out today when I had the e320c decatted and custom exhaust fitted.

so.... do you like the de cat and exhaust?

Yes, they weigh a lot.

The good thing is we have current weight data and when the car is finished we'll have after data, We'll then really understand the differences and have a set of springs made that match the car's weight and maintain the car's stance.

Buying a set of springs that mentions it 'lowers 40 -45mm' is too vague. Need fact :)

only pic I have it was to dark by the time they finished.

I have a set of powered design seats to install this summer.

Blimey!! Be prepared to spend a lot more on fuel, but the perfomance is worth it.
watching with interest mate, I hope the blind is still going strong. If you are coming to bournemouth when its finish drop me a PM. I would love to see the finished article in person..

Ohhhh, that back box looks good.

Whats the spec, where did you get it and are you pleased?

diff ratios E220 coupe 3.07 (4 auto), and E320 coupe 3.06 (4 auto) or 3,69 (5 auto), but gearboxes are diffrent beetwen the two. are you going to use 320 box?

Good to see you back on mate,

Blind is going strong! I use it a lot for night time driving (which leaves the dipping RVM obselete)!

During the summer it served its purpose well used for when the car was parked up. Come the afternoon sun it beams straight into the rear screen so was content that the rear burl wood console wasn't getting toasted! Will defo come down to Bournemouth when its done.

As for the fuel, the 124 isn't a daily mode of transport, I have BoJo to thank for that. Good old London Underground! The fuel isn't my worry - but the price hike for travel is!

Yes the 320 gear box will be used..
