Billy I mean the problems with your starting stopping on your first post

The cut out issue was somthing in the ignition system i believe, Simon will be able to elaborate further than i can at the moment to the actual issue:o he'll be along soon.

But to find the underlying issue i needed an ECU that was reading the correct faults in the first place!

Hi Dan, Billy's 320e donor car had 3 faults in the ignition system.

1. The coil extender on cylinder 6 had broken down causing arching to the cylinder head and a misfire to that cylinder. The ecu would only put up with this for so long before shutting off spark and fuel to the cylinders controled by that coil (cyl 1 and 6), then the car would only run on 4 cylinders. The coil that controls cylinders 3 and 4 would also randomly not fire and then pick up again.

2. The ecu had been repaired more than once in the past and did not look good internaly, the circuit for control of the ignition coils seemed to have an intermitant problem with a dodgy bit of soldering from a previous repair. The ecu would also not give fault codes for any of the systems, the only code that would show up was code 1, which helpfully means no faults.

3. There was a short in the wiring just after the ovp relay, which would cause a loss of power to the ecu for a split second. Sometimes this would cause a misfire, and sometimes would shut of power to the ignition side of the ecu causing the cutting out fault.

I think faults 2 and 3 were caused by the original engine harness degrading and spiking the ecu. Fault 1 is just down to old age of the parts.

Hope this helps....
