Billy's W124 Coupe Project

Yes there is, Sportline ones sit lower in the car. RHD Cabs didn't get the vibration damper on the strut.

I think they use the 129 mount to get the shock working in the correct range...??

You could prove me wrong by quoting me two different part numbers.

I only see the one part number for both chassis.

Part number's for mounts sportline chassis vs. Normal are the same. Pretty much in the same way the 320 control arms are the same regardless of sportline or not last time I checked EPC...

quality, the best 124 in London and probably the UK also!

That's too kind! However there are some markedly sublime examples in the UK currently.. Best 124 I've seen personally are two very nice examples of the E500 and 500E.

Actually Bill, the control arms are different part numbers, because the bushes within the control arms have different rubbers.

The sportline has harder rubber bushes to match the stiffer damper rates.

The lower control arms are differentiated with 'only used without sports chassis' and one's that are 'only applicable to sports chassis'.

...however one thing i did notice for the 320 control arms, they both have the same part number which is odd. sportline and non sportline. Maybe they have been all standardised now? ..

Taken from post #101 page 7^

i'd ideally like to confirm what these part numbers are for the control arms as i don't want to end up buying the wrong arms! But as above, checking part numbers on EPC with a VIN for a Sportline, they were the same..

OK Billy, you may have more recent info than myself.

I just looked at the original (old documentation) and part numbers are different.

I will do some more research in due course when time allows.

whats the betting Merc have "refined" their spare parts so they dont have to carry/make as many different varieties.

If you could post up the part numbers you have from your documentation mate, that would be great.

You could be right, I recently bought a new surpressor cover, the one I have from the donor has the badge painted grey. The same part number used to order a new one delivered me a cover that had the badge painted plack I.e. no colour. Surely these are two different parts!

I will be painting the badge chrome so doesn't really bother me, but your point could be very well valid.

When are you fitting a TT kit to this beast? I assume thats the reason you went with the 3.2 engine vs the 3.6?

It's looking great now the AMG kit is fitted btw

I have no desire to prove anyone wrong over this, but it is a fact that the non sportline strut mounts sit "up higher" in the chassis mount than Sportline ones do.

Now if MB have rationalised the parts like I strongly suggest they have they will now show only one part number for the two options.

Keep an eye out for it in pictures Dave you will soon spot the difference.

You are getting confused by a couple of people on the forums fitting 129
top mounts - myself being one that has fitted them at one time.

I have just looked at some 8 years old part numbers and the sport and standard top mount is identical part number for 124.

The idea for fitting 129 top mount to 124 cars is that 129 mount sits higher up due to it's design.

It therefore can be useful when someone has fitted lower springs to 124, and does not want to fit shorter dampers at the same time.

The 129 mount allows the standard length damper piston rod to keeps it's same working travel length, because the rod end is now bolted higher up than it normally would be.

That's what I thought about the 129 mounts, they are used to get the shock in the correct stroke range, but there is a difference in the factory fit top strut bushes, no confusion at all here Dave, I can spot them a mile away. :):)

On both accounts re 129 mounts that's the same information i've been told as well. I'm not exactly sure if i need to use them as the B8's are working well with the springs up front. Thoughts of if i'm changing them, might as well get somthing that may be a little more 'better' than standard ones.

so whats the verdict then... are we saying the top mounts can be sportline specific yes?

hummm, not sure about a TT.

.....Rotrex Supercharger perhaps???!!

Billy you might be on to something; the standard TT set up on mine needs some winding up before it flies. This means in day to day use its usually trolling around like a fairly normal 320. A modern supercharger setup will give you some nice low down torque.

As I can never seem to make a GTG these days if you fancy meeting up somewhere between our 2 locations you can have a go and see what you make of it.

Now that's what i'm talking about, and yep i remember we had a chat about these badboy's!

That's just it, i'm not too keen on the wind up of turbo's. I'd like input from the moment i press the pedal. From advice i've got during this project the Rotrex charger has been highly spoken of and delivers the results.

I'll take your offer on meeting up to give your TT a go. We'll arrange something in due course mate. Thanks!

This is going to turn into one of those turbocharger vs supercharger debates lol.

Supercharger - robs bhps or make bhp
Turbocharger - spool up time and takes years and £££ to make it run right
V8 - Now thats what im talking about :)
