I'm a bit confused here, lol

You know those small, little digital black boards that you see attached to a lamp post, and they suddenly say something like "SLOW DOWN - SPEED LIMIT 30", when you go past them a bit faster?

They're not cameras, right? Are they just some kind of speed sensors to warn drivers of going over the limit?

Thats right trying to scare you, or remind you of the speed , depending on what you think.

I deliberately went through one at 35mph so i could check my speedo, but all it said was "slow down"!!!:wallbash::wallbash::doh:

they actually make me slow down, they're usually found around schools. I think they're a great idea because sometimes you don't realise the speed you're going.

No countdown markers=no fixed speed camera;)

Seem to be two types, fixed and mobile, here in Cornwall and paid for by the County Council who have now indicated that they no longer intend to support them (removing funding along with other essential services). Royal Cornwall Hospital also has a couple which illuminate when you exceed 10mph, presume these are paid for by the NHS.

I was 99% sure that they're not cameras, but was kind of surprised when the display lightened up, when I went past it.

The particular one that I'm talking about is located in the middle of a quite steep hill, so when you're going down you obviously catch up speed. I think it's there to make you look at your speedo, as you might be going faster than usual...And there's a roundabout ahead, so it all makes sense.

There's one near us and its so sensitive, it flashes if a passing mouse farts.
They're meant to be more effective at reducing speed than cameras, and cheaper to run.

Personally, I ignore our local flashing distraction.

There's two on my road and I'm sure the calibration is wrong. Even if I drive past them at 28-30mph it say's Slow Down. Therefore almost every car that goes past is signalled. I think it makes drivers desensitised and renders them ineffective.

They do not have camera's but have proven to be more effective then speed camera's, a lot of drivers once caught by a speed camera are angered and then drive faster to release this anger, where those signs are just a gentle reminder that you are going over the limit and please slow down.

There are some in Glossop which have cameras placed just behind them, and then there are a few here in Sheffield which are just warnings.

Trouble with the warning type is the chavs scream through them in their Saxo's to see who can go the fastest!

Sadly that's true.

Better to use the speed Limiter rather than CC unless that is what you meant of course.:o

Its not the speed warning device you have to worry about its the speed camera van just down the road you haven't noticed! :wallbash:

There used to be a mobile speed sign on my work route ,it was located in a 100 kph zone, I enjoyed trying to see how high a speed I could get the sign to show . The highest i managed to seon it was 237 kph .
