BMW M3 v CL55

Sounds like fun Andy, remember to video and post here!!

200mph true speed would certainly be difficult, however AMS mag got 208mph out of an SL55 on Nardo when it first came out from memory.

what about the m3 csl? a friend of mine had one not so long ago and that was a rum bugger...

M3 CSL should be easy to beat (never thought i'd be saying that) in a straight line. Round a track the story would be very much reversed!!!

IF YOU EVER SEE ONE - HAVE IT!

They are cracking cars (csl) - tarted up go kart :) and yeah on track, i think the cl55 would struggle to keep up with it allbeit close it down only to see the rear end disappear at the bend!

Would rather have the cl55 though anyday!

CL55 AMG vs LANCIA INTEGRALE 2.0turbo16v(320bhp)

A story from a friend I did'nt believe -

Mate in his Lancia coming off a slip road joining the motorway met side by side with a CL55 AMG, wasn't with him and found it hard to believe he out accelerated the CL55 from 50mph to 140+ mph?? the guy was probably cruising in the merc and not paying much attention to the old batter'd car!!

I know how quick these cars are because I've driven both - no way could LANCIA 2.0turbo16v out accelerate the 55amg's power, Lancia's a quick car but only around corners!!!! too much turbo lag when heavily modified which means by the time your turbo's in the 55's saying bye bye!!.

If they both met on a motorway then the speed approx would have been around 60/70 ish correct ?? Had they both floored it, then im more than sure that the 5.5ltr would have absolutly roasted that poor little 2.0lts engine up to 100/140mph and way beyond.

Nice story for your friend but imho i can smell a bit of bull in it. :D

Forgot to mention that the CL55 AMG was in reverse...

LOL

Hello fellow rev heads. I've owned an M3 CSL for about a year now and I've had a 1-1 with a CL55 to 100 mph and I had a car length on it. This was on the A27 to Brighton just past Worthing on the nice flat section - AMG territory. I've also gone past SL55's in straight line drags. The CSL is quick not just on a track. It has another 40 bhp per tonne than a stock fatty M3 and the handling is on another planet.

Incidentally I'm not really biased, I hate BMW's - seriously - I only bought the CSL because it was a CSL and it reminded me of a mega HP 190 Evo like I previously owned. I'm not partial to the semi-luxury C36/C43/C32/C55 AMG's or the stock M3, I like the highly strung, teeth rattling racecar feel of the old Evo's so you can see why I went for the CSL.

If you catch a CSL on the motorway in the wrong gear undoubtedly the CL/SL will be faster and pull 2-3 car lengths - torque. But there is SFA in it. Not bad for a car you can pick up now for <£40k... If you want a car to destroy a CSL you'll need a CL/SL65. These will embarass just about anything on the road. Don't ask how I know..

I love my CSL to pieces but I have to sell it. Impending doom (first Wife) in < a month ;) thinks it's costing too much money  to own and run.. Bleh. So that's why I'm back on this site. C class diesel.....

I personally think that a). An SL55 will beat an M3 CSL easy. Better power to weight ratio and better aerodynamics which play a big part above 50mph. and b). The CL55 may not be as quick to start with but would sail past the M3 over 100mph due to much better aerodynamics. Dont get me wrong, the M3 CSL is a very very good car but its not as good as a 500bhp AMG monster! IMHO.

P.S Sorry to hear that the ball and chain is forcing you to sell the car

HI UKevo.

Maff is going to Terminal Velocity, I dare say there might be M3 CSL there that we could compare real times with.

Maff,

Give it a right good kicking! I am relying on you to uphold the honour of AMG !!!!

Good luck

P.S Make sure you keep the car as light as possible! very little fuel, no spare wheel etc ;)

Maff says he had three car lengths on a stock M3, why is it so unbelievable? A CSL will hit 185mph derestricted. A CSL does 0-100mph in 10.8 and 0-60 in 4.6 according to the Porsche lovers at Autocar. That is 1.3 seconds quicker to 100mph than a stock M3 - how many car lengths is that? CSL has 255 bhp/tonne SL55 has 238 bhp/tonne.

I love Mercs so lets not get into a mud slinging BMW-Merc debate I'm just relating some real world no BS experiences like Maff has. On road encounters prove very little, other driver might not be up for it, might be in the wrong gear, has poorer reaction times etc. Around a track or a drag is the only proof of the pudding.

Graham that would be very interesting to see. Some of the guys over on www.bm3w.com might be interested in showing up. Make sure whoever brings the CSL has worked out how to use LC!! lol Many haven't..

Those numbers are almost the same as the '55 AMG's (4.6sec is the best I got with my AP22 performance meter, and I managed a best of 10.1sec with the same performance meter, so not much difference.

Above 100mph though it would be interesting, when the wind resistance and sheer grunt of the AMG motor's pulls though.

Never had any real life experiances over 100 though with an M3, so cant comment. (Only with an RS6 upto 155 which wasn't difficult)

lighter than the same powered SL55 :)
None of that heavy roof folding mechanism or added rigidity bits for a start :)

Dont want to really start a war between our fellow competitiors, but all i can truthfully say is that i personally have destroyed several e46 m3's in a straightline sprint on many ocassions. The csl is not that much quicker than the stock m3, were it does exceed though is on the track. The real battles though are not fought on a track but on public roads.
See the attached pic, its my car and a close friends m3 with the smg g/box, as i said ive raced him many a times and he has yet to beat me,that will also apply for the csl.Video will follow as proof to this after the 4th september as will will both be at silverstone for the trax show.Bear in mind that you are talking about 2 cars in totally different classes, you are talking about about the csl which is a 2 door coupe modified for track use against maffs cl which is speed cruiser. When comparing 2 cars at least compare two that would have at least the same bhp/torque/&bhpper tonne and approx the same performance figures.

So it comes down to this........ C32 VS CSL have the same performance figures 0.60's & 0.100, you have manual/smg and i have auto, wanna put some money were your mouth is ???????
