Brake discs and pads

Greetings. Now my car is past its third birthday I no longer have to use MB OEM parts. Mercedes front discs and pads £245.20, Pagid equivalent under £130. Pagid are well written up and the discs come with a long warranty. My query, discs 54634 come vented and perforated, 54635 are vented but plain. Do perforations confer any benefit? A tyre technician told me they may help reduce pad glazing. The specs are identical except for the weight reduction due to the holes
 
Personally I would stick with the system as designed by MB and continue using MB parts.
 
I agree, check out the price of MB parts before you do anything else.

Drilled discs help dissipate gas that can be released from certain pad materials under heavy usage, conversely they also increase pad wear and can cause an increase in noise when braking and can be prone to cracking around the holes.

MB parts are not that expensive overall and will work with the rest of the braking system as intended. If you want to go with other brands look at ATE, they are often OEM suppliers to MB.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but on the SLK250CDI the base car has solid discs the "AMG Sport" trim (same engine, same power) has drilled front discs.

So whilst drilled discs may offer performance benefits, they do also provide as a nice marketing tool.

Personally , I would go with the groved disc . Main reason is that they are less prone to cracking. As to pad glazing , all you need to do is rebed them . A quick search on google will show you how if needed ;) .

Why does the OP need grooved discs? They are still prone to increased pad wear and noise.

I cannot recall having a pad glaze since I owned a FIAT 127 in 1980 something!That was only because the salt on our roads caused the caliper sliding mechanism to seize up, as well as the car disintegrate:D

I would have said that a few years ago but recent warped ATE discs and hints, here in France, that some ATE parts were from China, have caused me to think again.

My policy now is MB only.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Another thought struck me, perforated discs mean 360 grams less of what we used to call unsprung weight - the tyres would be in contact with the road a bit more... ...
