"Cars with the lowest rate of emissions would pay no vehicle excise duty but the 1% of most polluting cars would pay £210" - www.bbc.co.uk

Can't find any actual details. Anyone?

Not more TAX!!!!

It's typical, the middle ground gets hit yet again.

I am getting poorer and poorer as a result of this continued labour goverment.

I admit to being hugely relieved as both my cars are older than 1/3/2001 . My C230K under the new system would pay £210 vs £175 . About the E300TD I don't know as its so old. I guess they think anyone who drives an old car must be a labour party voter. Bring it on! A small victory.

I tried spacing it but it doesn't work.

The way I read it - anything bigger than 2 litres will hit the top bracket.

Well, that works out as well as I could hope for.

The only new car in the household was registered at the beginning of the month, and is a little Jazz 1.4, so tax should be comparatively naff all. The 2 big guzzlers (SL500 and Alfa V6) are as old as the hills, and therefore still apply under the old VED guide.

With fuel £60 for a tankful, who cares? (in the great scheme of things).

It's hardly the hammering of school run 4x4's that's been screamed by some commentators for the last week, is it?

it's just another avenue to increase tax, and spend more on the bloated bureaucracy, no matter what label or excuse the Government uses.

HIGHER TAXES.

OK, someone help me out and just tell me how much it will cost me! LOL.

People either do that, or work in McDonalds - there's not much else to do now.

For the cars listed under your avatar, just the same as the last time you taxed them.

If you trade up to a CL65 registered after today then you'll have to fork out a few quid extra every year. I hope that extra worry wont keep you awake at nights. ;)

Thankyou.

No, just one of the cars I am keeping track of prices on is a 5 litre (well 4.7), but not nuch newer than mine, so the same applies I guess.

Yeah I was going to trade my car in for a CL65 AMG but the ~£50 per year increase to the road tax was a deal-breaker! ;)

Do tell more!

So, who are these evildoers driving around in vast, gas guzzling monsters destroying the planet?

The 185 band starts at? A Mondeo 1.8i SCi 16V Saloon.

Ah, that does not exactly seem a monster to me so the new band must clobber some really evil machines! And let me see the second listing in the 226+ band is: a Mercedes C230 Estate. Oh.

So I think I will get a sub 100g/Km car. Odd: there do not appear to be any! A Toyota Prius is the lowest but manages to produce 104g/km.

It is green tokenism. And a wedge of extra stealth tax

Car data here:

You can search within bands by various criteria

A Hydrogen or Electric powered vehicle produces 0g/Km. Zero road tax, the only thing you have to decide is 6 months or 12 ;)

If you want free tax just buy a car pre 1972.

Works out I pay £87.50 a year per car if you look at it that way. :D
