According to the BBC;

"Mr Brown is expected to unveil plans for tax breaks for homes which use solar panels and wind turbines and a hike in road tax for the worst "gas guzzlers".
Some reports suggest that the duty on the least fuel-efficient cars will double to about £400 a year"

What is a least fuel efficient car and how do they measure this? I take it that this is just down to MPG? On the radio this morning they were suggesting he was targeting 4x4's!

I'm waiting for the announcement to see just what this means and how they're going to decide what's in the category for higher RFL. Will it just be 4x4s - interesting classification! or will they go on engine size? WIll have to wait n see I guess ;)

I hope its not engine size I might struggle moving the sec on
Never mind the 300ce I drive everyday, then theres my wifes 2.6l Audi :o

I have a feeling this will be based on CO2 emissions like it was last year. Oh dear and we have two V6s to run!

I expect that the large increase in Vehicle Excise Duty will be limited to vehicles in band G.

Band G contains all vehicles producing more than 225 g/km of CO2 first registered on or after 23rd March 2006.

I hope you're right as this will only apply to newish cars!!! This is the way the higher charge for the London Congestion area will be levied. £50 per day!

The treasury will target ANY section of the community that they think they can squeeze some money out of. Pretty soon we will all be taxed on bicycles and shoes as they are used for travel!

They cannot just target 4x4's as the function of four wheel drive on a vehicle does not have any relevance to its perceived burden on society/environment. For instance an Audi quatro saloon car versus a 4.4litre Range Rover. Still, if it catches all those Subaru boy racers that think they are super human well endowed macho boys, then it gets my vote!

My thoughts are that it will be based on Co2 emmisions as this catches a lot more vehicles than just the '4x4' owners. As we know, the government are very good at maximising revenue generation on the back of trendy, even if ill informed, public opinion.

I don't understand why there is not a higher VAT level on fuel say 20%. This would not affect industry as they can claim it back, but is would affect the general motorist:( including me:eek: Nah forget that idea:D :D

£400 a year is floating about for band G , its already £215 just now :(

Not that its going to really affect me , but i really should at the end of the day be paying the same as everybody else. I already pay more in fuel duty for the choice of car. Why should band G cars be victimised?

answers on a postcard.!

Because you will only chose a more efficient vehicle based on how hard it hits your pocket.
The Government now has legally binding targets to meet regarding emissions.

If you change your car for a lower polluting one, it won't affect you.

Also due to your car being larger and heavier than most the additional charge can be justified due to it causing more carriageway damage than a lighter vehice.

I can live with that having collected 5.5Kwh of heat energy so far today, and it's only 11;00am.:)
Oh, and yes I do shower....

but , why only target cars with high emissions registered after march 2006?

What about all the older cars , pre cat that are hardly environmental champs , why don't they impose a similarly high road tax to get them to move to more fuel efficient less polluting cars?

Nudge, nudge, kick, kick,
Talking of solar panels, nudge, nudge, kick, kick ;) ;)

Will there be an incentive to use diesel, or bio fuel.

Like others have said, how will they define what is a 4 x 4. The Audi is an excellent example and what about those vehicles where is cuts in and out?

I remain convinced that if common sense were applied then the vehicle excise license would be scrapped and a levy put on fuel, but that would be far to easy.

I'm waiting to be stung for having a 3.2ltr car and a nice house :o

Still, it's only money, oh and who will spot all the sneaky little stealth type taxes that he doesn't talk about? :)

I've got 2 lorries that need taxing the end of this month.
£1200 each:crazy:

Just wondering if a Suzuki Jimni would hit the high 4x4 tax bracket.

I'd like them to bring into line the 25 year tax exempt ruling.

but , that goes againsed the current thinking on VED. If a car is older , its less efficient compared to a newer car of the same engine size. So , why would a less efficient car get an exemption , surely it should go up the older the car gets?

Ouch!
My sister has just taxed their car over the Internet. It just falls within the 14 day window :)

Is it?
Not usually so with modern cars getting heavier and the engines being strangled by emission control gear.

For example the new E class diesels have higher Co2 emissions than the previous generation and the Euro111 cars are lower again. In fact the newer cars output more than an older E300 TD...Hmm.
