Budget Day Today

I've got a 2 tonne 5 litre car, but the annual mileage is tiny ... therefore the environmental impact (emissions, wear & tear on roads, etc.) is far less than from my daily driver 1.9 diesel. So why should I pay more road tax on the 5 litre car?

Rhetorical question because my SL is old enough for this to (hopefully) not be an issue. It currently costs less to tax than my Sharan :)

Reminds me of the Not The Nine O'clock News sketch with the reporter commentating on the Chancellor's Budget live from the House of Commons. It went something like:

Chancellor: For my budget this year, in addition to taxes on alcohol and tobacco, I will be implementing a new tax on the following items...

(Commentator, whispered: So here is the list of items on sale that will be taxed heavily this year ...)

Chancellor: .... wheelchairs, white sticks, hearing aids. I have done this in order to tax those members of the community who are unable to complain or object effectively.

(Commentator, whispered: So, no changes in this budget, then)

you guys should not kid yourself. It is a farce. it is called revenue generation. Nothing to do with environment or pollution. My uncle works in the corridors of westminister and he has categorically told me if everyone bought a G.wizz tommorow and no 11 sees his revenue go down , he would just put tax on the g wizz cars.
Likewise if everyone converted to L.P.G tomorrow ,within a fortnight it would become more expensive than unleaded or diesel.

Remember when we were told that 4 star was the most taxed because it was the most polluting. When L.R.P was introduced which was just as polluting as unleaded ,the price for 4 star never came down.
I say if you can afford it ,drive what you like. there is only one life to live so enjoy it while you can.

i agree , it just really gets on my goat how this government has turned the entire country into tree huggers hell bent on sitting in a dark room for the rest of their days with the heating off to save the planet.

The only real players in the global emissions problem are China , India and the US. Untill they stop or their export markets are severly strangled, there is no point.

Another stealth tax.

Here you go - key points

and he's sat down so it was short and sweet - or sour depending how you want to look at it.

Some interesting stuff in there - but only says RFL to £400 from next April for the heaviest polluting vehicles - whatever that may mean.

OK, so how do we find out what band our vehicles are in? For example, mine is a 2.2 diesel.

Harry

Presumably the RFL on the most polluting cars will increase year on year. In a few years time, there will be a lot of cars in that bracket on the second hand market with a BIG drop in value. Would you buy an £8k car with £800 (est) annual tax? Could be interesting in the future.

4x4 have already started the slide in values as a result of this being in the press some months ago.

At least those going mud plugging will be able to do it in a posh vehicle and still for peanuts, as long as it's SORN.

You still need tax, MoT and insurance to drive on green lanes, though. And you have to use the metalled road network to get to them.

But those bands only cover diesels and not petrol cars. I'm not convinced that will be the categorisation that they will use.

Petrols above 225 will go from £210 to £400 per one part of the BBC and to £300 per another. It seems that its just the "new" top band that will be hit from April next year.

I like the headline'y bit about 2p coming off the standard rate of I/C tax but that the 10% band is being scrapped is hidden in the small print. Most will be no better off :( so whats the point.

Portzy.

Uh.
The bands are set by the Co2, where your car falls is down to the emissions it produces.
The charges for the petrols is further down the page. Scroll down.

Yours is 254 g/km so will be band G.

That isn't good news.

As Portzy says Band G only applies to cars registered after March 2006 but I would expect anything over 226 g/km to get hit somehow.

Doh! - Homer moment:D (Simpson that is)

Well Edna was registered in 2003 so she isn't class G - but how do they get to those figures anyway?

Sorry - I am very dense on these things - I just pay the tax and get on with things :o :o

The manufacturers provide data derived from tests. Basically the more fuel you use the more Co2 you produce, it's why diesels score better.

Thanks Dieselman,

Since asking the question i found the same website however what you say does not tally.

I paid £135 for a years tax on my 2.2 diesel which would suggest its CO2 emissions falls in band d.

I also checked the merc website which said its emissions is 160g/km.

Does Anyone know what Group my car might be in?

It means Fuzzers X5 is for a big depreciation hit. Ebay will be awash with owners offloading them, actually it is already. Do a search on diesel estates, just about all of them are 4x4.
