Car
W203 006 model
Anyone ever bought a Mercedes and gone backwards in time instead of forwards. If buying older which would be the recommended models?

IMHO
190E 2.5 - 16V or 2.3-16V 'cosworth' (w201)
560 SEC in pristine condition (w126)
300 or 320 CE- 24V (w124)

Most of these are 80s to 90s, you could go older than this but you're looking for vehicles without tin worm and those that have been maintained which is a rare thing.

Would have thought it depends on what you want it for?

Summer Sunday drive
Cheap daily runabout
Investment..;)

My CE is my only car and suffers a few of the usual old car issues (although its largely rust free)..

I bought it because a mate reckoned a W124 was the most car you could buy for the least money...

10 months down the line I'm not entirely convinced by that one, but I do enjoy owning my 16 year old MB.

W210 E300TD - reliable, nice to drive, quick and easy to look after...(downside is they're a bit scabby around the edges)

107s rust (even if they don't look rusty they are) and parts cost a fortune.

123s rust and are mostly worn out by now.

190s rust and are mostly worn out by now.

124s good cars, but a bit boxy and the early ones are scrap.

126s rust and use loads of petrol.

140s don't really rust but parts really do cost a fortune.

202s rust a bit, but cats, diffs, wiper linkages and engine ecus are all expensive nightmares just waiting to happen.

170s good cars, other than soggy central locking compressors.

129s saggy interiors and worn out softtops are the only real issues.

I've gone from a 1997 C230 Kompressor to a 1990 190E 2.5-16, and a 2005 Audi A4 Cabriolet to a 1989 190E 2.5-16 Auto!? (temporarily...)

Age of car really doesn't matter to me anymore, I think I buy cars these days for what they are now :)

E280/E320 or C43/E55 for performance.

Further back in time = 190 2.6L or 300SL/500SL (91+)

Hi
I recently bought a W116 450SEL. Lovely. Previously had a w123
I'd agree with Ade B in that it really depends what you want it for.

Isnt our old chum Bernie Ecclescake selling one of his older Mercs today or tommorrow?
That could prove to be a rather nice purchase. I think its about 1934 or thereabouts.

I think he's off-loading quite a few.

I think he's heard about the potential rust problem and has decided to get rid - he's already fed up with his local dealer.

:D :D

Yeah he was in a bit of a quandry over renewing his MB warranty or taking out a Service Plus contract.

IF YOU want to buy an old unreliable rust bucket buy a ford lol

I have a '79 280CE which I love, but I wouldn't use it as an every day car. It needs much more tlc than a modern car, but on the other hand, it has been very reliable.

Old Mercs

I have a w126 300 se 1989. it is rust free, totaly reliable, and not that bad on petrol. and an absolute joy to drive.

I use it every day to work, 30 mile round trip.

And the best bit it only cost me £1000, and believe me, i have spent a lot more in the past and got a lot less enjoyment & had a whole load of problems. (Bmw,jag, Volvo etc)

Maybee i was just lucky.
