Buying Older Merc

yes,

i had a 1999 W208 CLK cabrio.

Sold it and got a new BMW 7 Series

Sold it and got a 1994 E300 Diesel Estate! (W124)

Go for it!!

Age of car really doesn't matter to me anymore, I think I buy cars these days for what they are now :)

Will

Same for me.. I went from 98 to 95 to 92 to 95 to 03 to 01 to 89 to 98 and now 93 ;)

Choose the car for what it is.. not how old it is.

Once you take the jump back to older cars you won't look back.....assuming you buy a good one. I got fed up with depreciation and my first older Merc was a W124 E280 and I did 60,000 miles in that car in 2 years and it never put a foot wrong. Was cheaper to service than a modern and I could do a lot of it myself.

Went on many trips down through France in it and would probably still have it were it not for the fact that somebody lost control going round a bend and crashed head on into it.

For everyday reliability the W124 goes to the top of the charts for me, especially as they have excellent build quality and are very comfortable cars to drive......estates are hugely practical and the CE Coupes are lovely cars to own.

Don't discount a W202 C Class either

First old Merc - 1975 W116 280SE. Lovely old car but I bought a dog and it died less than a year later. Very thirsty but petrol was only 50p per litre then.

Second old Merc - 1983 W123 280E. I ended up owning this for nearly 6 years, doing 30,000 miles. Cheap to service. Great everyday driver in London with road presence and enough poke. Bit thirsty but offset by cheap classic insurance at £120 per year. Bits of wheelarch rust but easily sorted. Completely reliable on 2,000 miles long weekends to France and back. Sold on to a friend with 130,000 miles on clock.

Third old Merc - 1992 W124 300E. Only just got this but like it a lot. Less thirsty than W123, lighter, faster and generally more dynamic. No rust on mine and cheap classic insurance again. Only 84,000 on clock so plenty of life left in her yet.

Thanks,
KK

My daily driver is a 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible, which I am not ashamed to say I love. However, the car has limitations particularily in the load carrying area so I bought a 1990 300TE-24 to move stuff like garden rubbish, offsprings' furniture between flats etc. The Merc was meant to be a short term thing, I paid £700 for it 18 months ago. I love it. It is a comfortable, fast, load carrying beauty. It has also been economical in terms of maintenance (not fuel unfortunately). This car will be with me until it dies, or I do!. Old is good.
