Hi all.

I am new to this forum so forgive me if this question has been previously covered.

I have a 2002 C270 CDI auto that has only covered 44k miles. I have owned for 2 years but cover very low mileage.

The last service (A) was in December 2006 and the computer is now counting down to the A service (presumably, as it is appraoching 2 years?) but only covered 4500 miles since.

The Mercedes dealership is quoting me £700+ for the service which does seem rather steep, but may also be including a gearbox oil change.

I would welcome advice on :
1) Is this price about right for a main dealer B service on my vehicle, given age and mileage?
2) Should I ditch the main dealer and go independant and if so, what are the pitfalls?

Regards
Phil

Hi and welcome ...have you a full breakdown for this amount? What filters and fluids are being replaced? How are the discs and pads?

i'd find an independent if you plan on keeping the car for a few years. I think most buyers once a car is a good few years old will accept service historty from an independent just as good as a dealer.

Crockers

I think the fuel and oil filters were done 2 years ago (4500 miles) and it had new rear discs/pads under warranty about the same time.

The alterantive MB dealer came up with a cheaper quote £350 but when I said about the dearer one, said that this may be including an auto box oil change, which is another £200.

For an MB dealer those prices are about right as "list" prices.

B Service is typically £450ish. MB say it should also have brake fluid changed every 2 yrs - not sure how much, maybe £60?

ATF change isn't necessary, but people say it's a good idea if you're going to keep the car for some time. My C270CDi is late 2004 and is on an MB service contract - they wouldn't do an ATF change as the requirement to change it started just after my car was built.

Most dealers are keen to get older cars in - mine (MB Chester) will do B services for £299 and will discount other work on cars 3+ by 40%. However, being cynical, I think this is just a way to get cars in so they can load on other work.
