Hi Everyone,

Well after a year of defecting to the Volkswagen brand, I have finaly tracked down and purchased the car I've wanted for the last few years:

2005 MY C220 Avantgarde (manual, yes I know but I really don't like auto's) with Sports pack, full leather and HK.

However I have some concerns, previous to the VW Golf I ran a 2002 C220 CDI (manual) classic, this car would always return a minimum of 40mpg however hard or fast you drove it, it would hit 47-50MPG on motorway crusies of 70-80mph

The new car's economy is nowhere near as good, if im lucky i'll get 40's on a run and down to 30-35mpg around town.

I never bother with A/C, my driving style has not differed, is it possibly because its a heavier car with bigger wheels? or perhaps there is a fuel/pump problem?

A friend has suggested possibly air mass meter, although there are no ECU/Engine lights on the dash.

Any input would be gratefully received.

Kind regards

Matt

PS Good to see the forum is still as good as it was...

I have a 2007 C220 cdi, sport, estate. The fuel figures for this model are 25/36/44I average 33 most of the time, and that is very steady driving. Reset the trip at 60mph on the motorway and it will read 44 until you go up a hill or slightly accelerate. The C320 is actually more efficient !CheersAdam

I think you will just find that its because the car you have now is EU 4 compliant and has slightly more BHP 150 and not 143 in your last car from memory. Which actually makes the car less efficient. Quite a few cars back we had an E220 CDI and i was lucky to see 36 average and that was the 150 engine.

Cheers Fuzzer, I think you could well be right, I'm going to do a remap in the new year, well let you all know how I get on.

Matt

I would be very interested in the outcome of your remap - let us know how you get on.

Cheers

I have posted this before, but as it's relevant to this thread here goes again.

I have a W203 '04 200CDI Estate which has the same 2143cc engine as the 220 but with a different engine map producing less power (can you see where this is leading?). I reset the computicle when I bought it (secondhand) and since then the average mpg is showing 46.9

Heavy stop/start rush hour traffic returns 28-33 for the trip, 'normal' urban/extra urban does 35-45 and a decent motorway run will easily show 55. A couple of cross-country runs involving a lot of dual carriageway and good single carriageways gave over 62mpg.

I freely admit that I am not a boy racer, rather I just keep up with traffic, but the biggest single factor affecting fuel consumption, and by some margin, is the right foot. A remap should help with your consumption, as my car shows it can be done with your engine.

Oh, and mine's an auto!

The computer in the display.
Use the steering wheel buttons to navigate to the trip display (elapsed time, mpg etc) and then ust the up/down arrows to display the "Since reset" page. Press and hold the reset button (lower left of the cluster, also adjusts instrument lighting) for about three seconds and it will go back to zero.

I owned a Facelift 04 C220Cdi (150BHP) Estate before my current car. I used to average 41mpg overall with 40miles (75-85mph) motorway and 20miles non-motorway (30-40mph).

Mine was an Auto and i think manuals are supposed to be 2mpg better.

When i got stuck in traffic ie 20mins for 1mile then it would drop down to 33mpg on average.

My tyre size was the standard alloys on an Elegance (16inch i think).

However, i had 122k miles on mine and i don't think the MAF had ever been changed. I don't know what mileage your vehicle has but i wouldn't have thought it was your maf causing the problem. Does the vehicle accelerate ok. In the past i've changed MAF's on a Bora and Alhambra because they became too slow and each time the acceleration improved once the maf was replaced. Might be a tell tell sign???

My long term plan was to get a remap too. But i switched too a E320CDi estate. I'm paying the price...but i love the e-class'.

Errr.... these mpg sound v poor:eek:

my 220CDI (semi auto) returns 50 plus on M way at 80 (53mpg last weekend, 4 up to Kent and back) and 40 ish round town

All of the numbers in the mid thirties sound like my old Laguna diesel!

Cannot offer a reason, but I am no lightfoot and have not modded mine in anyway

Surely these aren't right

Is the cold affecting them?

Fabes

You get 50+ at 80mph????

I'm going to reset the trip when I'm on the motorway tomorrow but I have a 30 mile trip to work 24 of which is motorway and to average 44mpg for the journey I had to do 55mph on the motorway.

I also have a c220cdi auto sports pack, my computer usually reads 36-38 most of the time. I did 800 mainly motorway miles today and averaged 35, average spped 65MPH.

Im going to do a true comparison with miles and fuel reciept when i can be bothered. I dont have to pay for my fuel however I still dont like wasting company money and i have to say I find the car suprisingly thirsty.

Hello,

My dad has a E320cdi estate he has had since new and regularly gets over 40mpg and see's 50 mpg if cruising.

He had a 220cdi auto Coupe for a few days as a loner and was suppised it struggled to do 40mpg.

Maybe its a heavy car with a relatively small engine? and the auto box zaps a bit?

Daft thing is a C270cdi may actually be better?

I had a C200Cdi for a week or so and was surprised to see 32mpg average...

The thing that I can't work out is, if you thrash the car it doesnt do a great deal to my consumption... I took the car to europe last week and at 100mph it was still doing 36-38mpg, the same as I get at 70mph!

Don't forget mines a manual too!

You're probably driving it too gently. Give it some real beans up a steep hill to burn off any glaze then see.

from all the thrashing out on this and other forums I think it can be concluded that these later 148BHP engines are more "euro compliant" and therfore have been designed by mercedes to give lower CO 2 emissions rather than economy and performance, my 2001 C220 CDI (manual 6 speed) never dropped below 40MPG and was quicker with only 143BHP.

I love the car, and I guess I just have to get used to the fact that £70 worth of juice does about 450 miles.

Its questionable wether the CDI model is worth buying over petrol Kompressor... I had a 56 plated auto on hire (C180k) that constantly gave 35MPG....and a much more pleasant drive.

Sigh :(
