C220 CDI Poor fuel consumption??

What kind of mpg do you get with normal driving Malcolm?

Thats better than I thought.

Not a huge difference on motorways,, driving the car home M6-M5 it returned 29.9 mpg going north the last time I only managed 27.5 mpg, but as said I got over 24 going on a B road at 40-50 mph yesterday

They are only 2-4 mpg worse the the smaller engined versions

from all the thrashing out on this and other forums I think it can be concluded that these later 148BHP engines are more "euro compliant" and therfore have been designed by mercedes to give lower CO 2 emissions rather than economy and performance, my 2001 C220 CDI (manual 6 speed) never dropped below 40MPG and was quicker with only 143BHP.

I love the car, and I guess I just have to get used to the fact that £70 worth of juice does about 450 miles.

Its questionable wether the CDI model is worth buying over petrol Kompressor... I had a 56 plated auto on hire (C180k) that constantly gave 35MPG....and a much more pleasant drive.

Sigh :(

It all seems pretty consistent. I had a clear journey from Bristol to the south coast tonight at an average of 60mph. Got 44mpg, up to a mile from home, then with a couple of miles of urban, that dropped it to 41mpg overall. (Auto 5 speed)
Disappointing, but when you go back and read the manufacturer's figures its not that much of a surprise. What is good is that a 40+mpg is maintained cruising at 70mph and beyond.

cheers
Rich

I have recently been working on a project that has had me commuting daily from Cambridgeshire to Dartford. It is a mix of windy country lanes, dual carriageway and fast and slow motorway.

In my C220 cdi estate (auto) I have found that when the fuel tank is full, I am getting around 5 mpg less than when the tank is half full or less.

On a run I have had MPG varying from 41 to 51 depending on the traffic and the state of the fuel tank. I guess the fuel must weigh quite a bit!

I dont like the sound of £70 giving u 450 miles... i got a c230K myself, 2.3litres (the old one) and it has a tank that fills for 60 quid. i've put an extra tenner in it, just to see how much £70 would give (super unleaded ofc) and it gave me 424miles. so the diesel has alot less power and umph... but u do 30 miles more then a petrol engine with a kompressor?
and the milage i get is motorway/town combined, because i travel to reading mon-fri (about 70 miles a day).

I might be wrong here.. but i'm not a diesel fan myself ;p

Hi everyone, enjoyed the reads on this thread most enlightening!

Did a run from Chester to Leeds keeping up with the flow of traffic in the fast lane over the weekend, and managed to average 46mpg all of the way!!!! horraaaaay the best I've had to date.....what I can't understand is coming off the M62 through bradford my MFC maintained that I was still doing 46mpg all the way home... considering this was serious stop start driving for at least 10 miles I found it a bit strange... anyone else seen this?

I have not had a full tank for a while, so haven't reset the computerator, but it currently says 1500is miles @ 43mpg. Even with the error: 40 is not bad.
A round trip to manchester gave me 60 on the computer :bannana:
