C350e owners club

I believe it always activates 15 min's prior to and runs on for a maximum of 5 mins past the set departure time. It just varies the heat output / seat heating during that time to ensure it's at the right temp for departure.

My dealer informed me that it indeed was able to run for longer period if required (due to low outside temp). Not 100% confident that he's right though...

Did also receive an information sheet at delivery specifically written for the Swedish market which explained the difference pre-heat vs diesel heater. Apparently the pre-heat can use up to 5kW of power. Since the charging with 16A only can deliver ~3.8 kW the battery will indeed suffer a bit if the heater runs on max power even with the charger plugged in.

I've just had a flick through some of the literature I have on the car and I've noticed the statement "up to 55 minutes before departure time and if necessary 5 mins after departure time" so in particularly cold weather, it looks as though it could activate almost an hour before you leave. That was a surprise to me!

Does anyone get an ice warning indication when temperatures are low? It was +2.5 degrees C the other day and no warning at all. Most of my previous cars always gave in indication when the outside temperature was +3 degrees C or below.

I've thought that myself. Mine's been down to +1 and no indication.

Mind you, I don't particularly miss it. My last car used the same "bong" noise whether it was on the verge of a catastrophic blowup, or just letting you know it was a bit chilly.

Hey everyone. Yesterday I received a tyre pressure warning in my OSR tyre and took it into the shop for a closer look.

After only 12k miles over 11 months, with an estimated 70% of those miles done on the motorway, both rear tyres (Bridgestone Potenza 245/40/18) had worn down to 2mm but even worse was the OSR had worn through to the cords on the inner shoulder - causing the leak.

The fronts are in great condition with over 5mm remaining all round.

So this post is to say firstly, as we are now in winter, everybody go check your rears! And secondly, what kind of distances is everyone else getting?

Our other car, a BMW 5 series MSport had its rear tyres (Michelin) changed after 28k and my previous MB, an SLK covered over 20k without needing a change when it went back at the end of its lease.

Maybe it's the combination of the huge weight at the rear and the instant all on torque, when you accelerate?

Anyway, the last time I had Bridgestones was on an X5 and I remember those being soft wearing too....so I am now on Pirelli P-Zeros, let's see how it goes.

My 350e saloon is now >25k miles and I have already had two sets of new rears and one set of new fronts (18" Continental's). I believe Potenza's are softer so I would argue that you have done OK :). I reckon we are looking at 10k miles for the rear tyres and about 18k for the fronts.
I didn't know Mercedes ever fitted Potenzas. I had heard that they used Continentals on 18" wheels and Khumo for 17" wheels. I like Potenza's - they are one of the grippier tyres available especially in the dry although the Continentals are a good all weather tyre.

Hankooks on mine. Only 2.5k miles though, so I can't comment on wear yet. I hope. Maybe I'd better check.

Had the car since April 1 this year and done 21k miles and I'm about to order my third set of rears! Car came with the standard 17 inch rims with Khumo tyres. I then put 19 inch amg alloys on once the original tyres were 3mm. I have goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric on the 19s which on my last car would last approx 16k miles, on the Merc they have lasted 9k miles.
I've noticed the back end getting very twitchy in the wet cold conditions we have had this week.

I've done 16,500 miles since April.

Still got 4mm on rears, 6 MM on fronts. Hankooks.

Does anyone know the front and rear rim widths ?

What is the correct winter tyre size for the car ?

The 17" wheels are 7" front and 8" rear.
The 18" wheels are 7.5" front and 8.5" rear.

I've had quite a bit of too-ing and fro-ing with MB technical about winter tyres for the C350e as there's nothing in the handbook, and nothing on the car. I've had numerous replies, but my last one was this, which I've gone for:

13th October 2016

Dear Mr Chaos

Mercedes-Benz Model: C-ClassC 350 HYBRID Chassis No: WDD205XXXXX

Thank you for contacting Mercedes-Benz Customer Service.

After consulting with our technical department, they have confirmed the winter wheels with measurements and part number 7J X 17 H2 ET 48,5 A2054010400 7X45 are an approved size for this vehicle

The wheels were £500 delivered from here:
NEU Mercedes-Benz original Alufelgen Satz C Klasse 205 7x17 ET48,5 A2054010400 | eBay

TPMS valves were £185 from my local dealer.
Part number A0009058504.

Continental TP860 seem to be well regarded, as do the Nokian WRD4.
2016 AZ Winter Tyre Test - Tyre Reviews
I went for the Contis in 225/50 R17 98V XL. £466 delivered from Camskill.co.uk

They'll be going on my car on Tuesday, so I'll let you know how I get on.

Chargepoint types; winter tyres

I've placed an order for a C350e (to be delivered in Feb) so now need to get a chargepoint organised and also think about some winter tyres.

Is there anything much to choose between chargepoints? What about installers? (Technically I could install it myself but then wouldn't get the grant).

Re winter tyres: my old Saab Aero was transformed when I fitted winter tyres so I'll be doing the same with the C350e. M-B have quoted just over £1300 for wheels and tyres but I don't know whether that's good or bad yet, or whether it's worth getting wheels. Changing the tyres over costs £80/year so with wheels and sensors at about £700 it's guite a long payback period, plus the hassle of storing wheels+tyres rather than just tyres.
Thanks for the link to the tyre test, the Nokian WRD4s look tempting.

I think if my car was coming in February I might be tempted to wait until the following October before looking at winter tyres.

The valves are a ball ache and add an additional expense. My last car (BMW) monitored the tyre pressure via the ABS sensors detecting a change in rolling radius. Much simpler and no need for special valves. The Mercedes valves have a small watch type battery in them, so overtime they need replacing anyway!

I haven't bothered with a charger at home. The main advantage seems to be speed, but as I charge overnight, it didn't seem worth the hassle.

I have had a Rolec for over a year and its been faultless. I used a local installer rather than the national guys who kept haunting me after making an enquiry online.

I went with paying £ 50 to change and £ 80 to store. Had them changed yesterday. Saw an advert for Alloy Gators and had them put on for the winter - bit expensive at £ 135 but could save a fortune in the long run. I have had winter tyres on the last 3 Merc's and wouldn't be without them now.

I have an Obsidian Black so went with the red as a contrast - I am a little undecided as they look a bit blingy but when they get a bit dirty ......

Don't use an extension lead !

Thought it would be okay using an extension lead (unwound) with the 3 pin plug unit until my charge point gets installed - no charge this morning .... found out why! Lucky I didn't burn the garage and house down!

Set to 16A or 8A?

Please say that's not the MB lead that's fried!

Hi set to 8A - the black plug was an extension lead plugged into the extension box nothing else on the socket .... my own stupid fault

Right. I was skeptical 8A could be too much for a lead. Apparently it can. I hear some of them are pretty dodgy.
