C55 De-cat pipe

you have to have seen this coming

what would a good de- cat on a c36 sound like olly

Just a quick update to everyone following the de-catt & resonator delete that Olly did on my C55 last week.
On Saturday I took the car to Cadwell Park race track in Lincolnshire, (luckily the weather held out up north!).

In order to be allowed onto the track all cars had to have a noise (exhaust) test. As the C55 red lines at 6500-7000 RPM they asked me to put the car in neutral & rev the engine to 3500-4000 RPM while they measured the noise. The level they recorded was only 83 decibels!
For comparison a friend of mine who was also racing his E92 M3 (with the BMW standard 4 exit exhaust) had to rev to 4500 RPM & his car recorded 88 decibels. So I can totally confirm that the exhaust modifications are completely non-intrusive & fall very well within the legal tolerances required.

I am also very happy to say that 2 guys with TVR’s )Giffin & Sag) came over to me & were really impressed with the sound of the car, I also had 3 or 4 bikers who were there racing ask me about what had been modified as they had never heard a Mercedes sound so good & finally the official track day photographer commented that under full acceleration on the straight the car sounded the best vehicle all day by a long shot! :thumb:

I am so pleased with the result.

Thanks for the feed back.

I am tempted to de-cat my SL (purely for the change in exhaust noise) but I'd need reassurance that my already scary fuel consumption isnt made any worse.

The fuel consumption should decrease slightly IMO with a better flowing exhaust. Consumption may increase if you floor the hot pedal more than necessary in order to enjoy the nice sound :D

Certainly mine de-catted (before I bought it) is doing 20mpg on the longer of the two computer calculations and goes down in to the teens if I nail it on the 'since start' one.

I don't believe it makes any significant difference in the real world but I love the sound...

There's the ting, I get about 30mpg on mine without trying too hard.

My regular London rush hour commute still returns 26mpg - If a decat brings this down to the 20mpg mark then I'd have to say that this would be a show stopper.

Hmm, I don't know what mine was like before as I obviously didn't own it.

My long term one is actually on 21.8mpg so it has gone up a little, and my after start one starts in the teens and then gets to 20mpg by the time I get to work - mix of urban and mostly combined driving with a little extra urban.

However, it is inline with the quoted figures for it.

What are the quoted figures for yours?

I wonder if yours is lighter than mine (1.8 tons)?

Also, I am guilty of over-accelerating to hear the sound.

:D

I will be taking a 2 x 4 hour drive this the weekend to the Italian part of Switzerland. It will be the first time I will be doing this run since the installation of my secondary decat and resonator delete pipe and replacement of standard air filters by Green air filters. If I can restrain myself from not doing too much "pedal to the floor", it will be an interesting exercise to check any differences in fuel consumption. I have been monitoring fuel consumption on my C43 (and C240T too) since over a year now. Will get back after the weekend.

I was parked up at Finchley Central station just a few days ago! If Im there again I will PM you.

Any chance of a video clip of cold start up? Im going to do this to my C55 but using the X-Pipe design.

Thanks

Finally, anyone thinking of having this mod is very welcome to come and have a listen to mine in N. London (Barnet/Finchley Area) if they can’t quite make the trip down to Prestige. Believe me – you Won’t be disappointed!!

Check my post #73 for one installed in a C43 :thumb:

What options do we have regarding pipe design? What are the benefits of the x-pipe vs the straight through or other pipes?

I've pretty much decided that if I have any exhaust work done at all I'll have the rear cats and resonator removed and a second set of AMG tailpipes put on at the same time. Might as well do the job properly and have it off the road for the least amount of time! If I don't have the other work done I'll only wish I did while it was on the ramp...

The Americans swear that the x pipe is the only way to go. It seems that since V8’s fire unevenly, exhaust exits in pulses rather than a steady flow. While one pipe is filled with pressure the other pipe is relatively pressureless but the connecting of the two pipes in a siamese pattern allows pressure to be released to the other side. This action allows the exhaust to pass through the pipe quicker and this better ‘breathing’ increases horsepower. It also seems that a cross pipe gives a more mellow overall sound. The best x pipes must be as straight a design from one pipe to the other.

Hi Movi-star, I live very close to Finchley Central. I'd be happy to show you my car next time you are around here. I'd also be really interested to see your car & have a chat. I don't know if i have enough posts for PM yet (will try & get enough posts up in the next 24hrs).

That is a great question (above). As far as i know the options are; Straight through pipe (like mine), X-pipe, Y-pipe. However, when i was researching this info i was informed that you can add an x-pipe to the front of the straight pipe & lit just makes the sound a little more quiet?:dk:

I have not noticed any change in fuel consumption. However, it is very hard to measure as with the de-catt sound you will definately leave it in (s) mode or lower gears longer to appreciate the noise!
