My CL63 also occasionally does it but it's completely random. It seems more common when the car is used for short runs for a few days, after longer runs it vanishes for a while. I discussed it with a specialist and they said not to be concerned as long as there is no rattling/ticking when fully warm.
There us an MB service bulletin that recognises this cold start rattle and does indeed suggest changing the cam adjuster but I have read about others having had this done and it still making the noise - and bearing in mind it's a c£2k job per bank (I have been told) one would need to be certain that it is the solution before embarking on that route. Also, supposedly, 2010 on engines had modifications to prevent it, but judging by some of the posts on here it's happening with cars made after that date.
Other suggested reasons have included the oil filter cartridge not being fitted correctly and dirt/debris blocking a valve in the cam adjusters which was removed by a good engine flush - I have no direct evidence to say either works.
It seems a fairly common issue and the fact that it only does it for a split second after start doesn't particularly worry me, but I am curious to know what part normally prevents the oil from draining away from the cams when the engine is switched off and why it only doesn't work occasionally. Is it, for example, electronically controlled and there's an intermittent supply issue or is it just a positioning issue.
