That's not entirely true. There are several 4WD GT and drag cars in use and quite successfully so, may I add... The reason 4WD hasn't made it in to F1 yet is probably due to the fact that it will take the 'fun' out of the sport by eliminating another variable factor from the equation.

Aside from the obvious weight restrictions in place, it is interesting to note that it was the Williams FW08D, rather than any 4-wheeled car, which prompted FISA to ban 4WD from Formula 1 in 1982. The FW08B was a six-wheeled (4 driven wheels at the rear and 2 undriven wheels at the front) variant that originated from the FW07D (also six-wheeled). It never raced. Williams Formula 1 team co-founder and former technical director, Patrick Head, specifically said that the reason it was banned was because "someone in a FOCA meeting said it would drive up costs and cause chaos during pitstops". The FIA promptly limited the number of wheels for all cars to four, of which only 2 may be driven....

Most recently however, with the advances in modern technology, there have been talks to introduce 4WD technology to the sport where the front two wheels are actually powered by electric motors thus eliminating the need for heavy propshafts, etc.

Tony.

Once women start driving in F1, they'll move more towards 4WD.

Would be quite interesting when the whole trend of 4WD is picked up by Mercedes and all of the hardcore supporters of 'RWD only' suddenly jump on the band wagon and start praising the beauty of 4WD systems.

I can't wait to dig this post up on that day :D:D:D

Oh I'd love to hear their excuses then... On a serious note though, I'd be the first to buy a 4WD AMG so I'm unsure why people are so sceptical of proven technology if it's applied correctly. Unless of course, they have no faith in our beloved MB brand.

you're not that old and it's not far off... It'll happen in your lifetime, don't worry! :D

LOL @ where this thread has went...

Think my next car will be 4WD, possible even audi RS :-)

You know there are quite a few 4WD AMGs right?
Yes but I'd rather wait for AMG's response to the likes of the RS7...

With that said, one thing you must bear in mind, the 2JZ platform was way over-engineered for its time. I.e. The chassis, including the engine and (manual) gearbox were tested at over 800bhp with similar torque figures. That's why the 2JZ Supra engine can safely handle 800bhp on the stock bottom end! There are people in the USA and UAE running circa 2000bhp out of forged Supra engines and STANDARD manual gearboxes. I'm actual yet to see one fail - but then again, it's built by GETRAG and they certainly know what they're doing!

I've no doubt the car can withstand the power - but we are not talking about handling power safely here.

We are talking about being able to drive the car and it being able to cope with the power it has - and I can well believe a 1200BHP Supra is a nightmare.

Acid's 750/800BHP C63 was bad enough (albeit in the wet) - and that is far newer technology.

As you already had a modified E55K - you already know that it drives perfectly fine with 25% or more power...

My point was that anything over 550BHP with RWD is "uncontrollably frightening".

What is is taking a car well beyond the power it was designed to run.

Manufacturers moving towards 4WD is only a matter of time - as is evident in the clip of the Audi VS AMG. We are reaching the limits of 2WD with the power these performance models are now developing.

It certainly wasn't a nightmare, it was ridiculously fun to drive actually, especially in the dry. Moving on to your second point, I may have to disagree with you on that, the car was running the most powerful ECU around - The Syvecs S6 (which is actually used by several professional racing teams around the globe - The fastest GTR in the world even has one!) the unit also provided the most sophisticated traction control system that I've ever seen. So in terms of technology, it was packed with the latest kit. Yet it was still a handful to drive and something tells me this wouldn't have been the case if the Supra was 4WD.

koenigsegg are still 2wd. And there not bad with 1200BHP+ :thumb:

You never hear of one racing a C63 however ................... :D

Well done. The stig crashing one on a racetrack.

I guess if he had one of those Audi's with that modern 4wd that looses less through the transmission because its safer he'd of been ok.

Sarcasm aside, yes, he would have been safer and guess what, he would have beat the time set by the koenigsegg!
