That's not entirely true. There are several 4WD GT and drag cars in use and quite successfully so, may I add... The reason 4WD hasn't made it in to F1 yet is probably due to the fact that it will take the 'fun' out of the sport by eliminating another variable factor from the equation.jotter22 said:I was under the impression all top line motor sports vehicles were RWD be it F1,Drag racing, GT car's surely if there was a faster option it would now be in use? Tony.
Aside from the obvious weight restrictions in place, it is interesting to note that it was the Williams FW08D, rather than any 4-wheeled car, which prompted FISA to ban 4WD from Formula 1 in 1982. The FW08B was a six-wheeled (4 driven wheels at the rear and 2 undriven wheels at the front) variant that originated from the FW07D (also six-wheeled). It never raced. Williams Formula 1 team co-founder and former technical director, Patrick Head, specifically said that the reason it was banned was because "someone in a FOCA meeting said it would drive up costs and cause chaos during pitstops". The FIA promptly limited the number of wheels for all cars to four, of which only 2 may be driven....
Most recently however, with the advances in modern technology, there have been talks to introduce 4WD technology to the sport where the front two wheels are actually powered by electric motors thus eliminating the need for heavy propshafts, etc.
