Cannons CLS320 CDI W219 project - make it low

Nice work cannon, like it's been said good to see someone doing something different to a iconic car.

Now that looks great but how practical will it be?
Thanks a lot
Um... it managed speedbumps ok today and seems to have a fair amount of clearance underneath. But let's see in a few days when it settles

I wasn't sure when you mentioned 18" but that works really well.

Thanks mate. Really chuffed. Looks better with centre caps. Needs a wash tho

Plenty more bits to do :-)

Looks well but I think 18" wheels are too small for the body size.

Have you seen bassboy4321s thread?

The trouble is if you go bigger on the wheel size the discs look weedy if you have open design wheels.
Many years ago I was at a car show and there was a new American car with 20 inch chrome wheels of an open design and discs the size of tea saucers when I pointed this out to the surrounding car enthusiasts everyone started to laugh about it because it did look silly.

A lot of work has gone into this obviously and I can only marvel at the level of knowledge you have on the whole car lowering/modding thang.
But, for me its too low. Thats just an opinion though and they are like ****holes, we all have one !
Looking forward to seeing the outcome when the cars finished.
Interesting thread Cannnon.

yeah to be fair if i had gone for 20s (which they do in the xxr968 that I have in 20x11j then i would have been happier, but its October now and I would have been waiting until end of march as they are custom order, what I will likely do it run the 18x10.5 on the front and the 20x11j on the rear when I order some up, which would allow me a but more chassis clearance and run the car a tad lower on the wheels, BUT for now I am quite happy and the car does tuck and doesnt rub and seems to be getting alot of attention from the right people, which is great,

I had a read of that thread, funnily enough one of the reasons I thought about modifying the CLS

love the idea of Piano black interior trim but not sure it would work with the beige leather, however still on the hunt for some bits and bobs, and deffo will be doing the interior bulb changeover as the yellow ones drive me mad as much as they are meant to be "ambient"

totally agree

here is my Nissan 180sx on 18" wheels running R34 GTR front brakes and makes a huge difference, compared the the piddly little stock front brakes

Luckily the front brakes on the CLS are pretty decent anyway so compliment the current wheels, but Its always an option for a cheeky AMG upgrade in the future, but first I would prefer an AMG bumper :)

I will give the car a clean, clay and polish this weekend and then get some proper pictures up for your enjoyment

Cannon :)

thanks man :) and honestly dont worry, I appreciate any feedback and thanks for taking the time to read the thread, as for being too low, I havent beached on anything yet, have made it over truck speedbumps and normal ones, up and down the motorway and in and our of carpacks and ramps ok, I am lucky the underside of the cls it pretty tucked up, and years of driving low cars has given me the understanding of how to tackle some of the bigger bumps,

but so far with 4 people in the car, still just as comfy if not moreso on the drive and definately feels more planted around the twisties :)

Its just cosmetically too low for me. I can see the merits of slamming it for handling purposes though.
I say that as I've got a 2010 350 CLS Grand edition now and had a mapped 330D Beemer before hand and the Beemer gave me more confidence round the corners. The CLS is a bigger car though so I have to expect that. I've lowered mine by 25mm on the rear to level it out as the rear seemed to sit higher and made the car look a bit odd IMO. This raised rear look was apparently due to all the cars being set up for airmatic suspension in mind and mine didnt have it so I thought it looked too high at the back.

Whilst the Beemer felt better in the corners, at "silly" speeds on the motorway (or should I say Autobahn!) the Merc feels like its on rails and doesnt move whereas the Beemer was nowhere near as settled. The CLS is a better all round car by FAR !

the car got a very very quick bath today, bit naughty as I rarely use hand car washes and normally do it myself, but was in a hurry at work,

tomorrow the car will get a proper wax, clean, windows given a rainex, and wheels re-waxed and treated,

for now here are a few shots,

the rear has settled and is now about 10/15mm lower than the front, which is unusual as normally the weight of the engine drops the front of the car, so will be adressing this and trying to adjust and tweak the height this weekend,

it comes down to.. do I man up and lower the front 15mm, or do I be a big girl and raise the back 15mm

OR just meet in the middle and raise the back 10mm and drop the front 5mm

Anyway here are a few pics of the quick clean today, I need to keep my DSLR on me more, crappy phone pics do nothing for this car.. :wallbash:

Thanks buddy

I have to be honest. These guys are good. Microfiber cleaning mits. Different bucket for wheel and sills and rest of car. But still. Will be giving it a clean myself tomorrow

I suppose it does look as if you've got a few stiffs in the boot !
Got to say, it does look good lowered, but can the front handle another 15mm drop without tyre rub ?

Gave the Car a wipe with the shiney cloth

let me know your thoughts,

In my opinion the fronts need to be 20mm wider, and 15mm lower

Looking good! Agree with the front needing to be a bit more flush, not sure about lower though!

Looks great, credit to you. Super clean, love the rear stance, maybe some spacers up front or some more neg camber... although your tyres won't last long! All the same, looks fantastic.

Lovely motor, really wants 19's though, 20's if you add an amg kit.

Agreed

they dont do these wheels in 19s so 20x9 20x11 would be the choice,

but need to locate an AMG front end first :)
