Caught doing 79mph in a 70 zone

Do not speed! If its 70 limit, then keep it below ....and so on. I just don-t understand why some people do that ...speed up and then say sorry !?
Dunno if you can prove them wrong but id suggest a solicitor for that.

Recently i got back from Dundee and was shocked. It seems that in Scotland drivers are more *sane* and keep it within limits. In England is another story.
M6 roadworks 50mph= some guy passed with 80mph. Just drive on M6,M1, M4, M5 and count the cars with speeds over 70. Trust me , you'll be amazed.

Never had a speeding ticket and will keep it that way :)

The speed limits were set up when the performance of car brakes could be measured with a calender, and to take into account the fact that a percentage of drivers are just rubbish. This means the rest of us, who have put ourselves out, and learnt to drive to a high standard, have to suffer the indignity of having to follow halfwits that drive at 40 in a 60 through double white lines, and then just continue through the next 40 still going at 40!

If you think going at a little bit over 70 on a motorway when theres nobody about.....

Perhaps we are too tight to waste our fuel...

I suggest its probably because cities in Scotland are much closer together (hence the lesser need to travel above the NSL) and we mainly have 2 lane motorways and dual carriage ways.

Only sections of the M8 and a chunk of the M74/A74M are 3 lane (which facilitates higher speeds of travel-think what happens when 2 lorries try to pass each other on 2 or 3 lane roads)....

Having sampled 2 runs up and down to Oxford and Portsmouth in this month alone, I find the 3lane sections of the M74 is bad for speeding, as is the M6 (north of Charnock Richard services-south of this and Birmingham traffic is just too busy to go above NSL) and M40 in particular.

Apologies for the ongoing thread hijack, but...I have a Zumo 660 which is a very good package - much better than the TomTom Rider, imo. If you haven't found it yet The ZumoForums is a great resource for Zumo owners & potential owners. PM me if you want any other info.

Cheers fella :thumb:

Thats a right hive of info that Zumo forum, that'll keep me quiet for a bit :p

In my days on "The Force" you allowed a variation of 10% + 2mph before taking any action to allow for speedo inaccuracy etc which would mean at 79mph you'd have been OK.

Dont know if this has been abolished recently though as a friend got stung for 36 in a 30??

Just a thought.........

30mph + 10% (3mph) + 2mph = 35mph :thumb:

Need to find a friendly bobby to follow in a calibrated patrol car, one would hope that their systems are fairly accurate!

Or ask one of the volunteers doing speed duties to take a reading with their radar gun. They ought to oblige, its in a good cause :)

Trucks have to have their speedo's calibrated every so often, I usually get mine done just before putting new tyres on the drive axle as it affects the speed limiter, it makes about 4kph difference to fit new tyres, when it has just been calibrated the speedo is pretty much reading the same as my sat nav, never more than 1 KPH astray until the new tyres are fitted, my guess is the Sat nav is pretty accurate nearly all the time, but on rare occasions goes a bit funny

Theres a few m/c bobbies that have left posts elsewhere, saying that its now 10% +1 = 34, if they feel the need to enforce it ;)

I think, in certain circumstances, ie around schools, roads with lots of shops during the daytime, then that allowance is quite generous.
Most bobbies seem to use sensible discretion thankfully.
30 mph past a school at hometime is far more dangerous than 80 mph on an empty motorway. I know its stating the bleeding obvious, but its depressing to see how many people just don't get it!

Its a shame that speedo accuracy is not part of the mot, which would force manufacturers to make them easier to calibrate. Would open up a can of worms though, probably why it has never happened.

Hmmm, another vote for satnav, seems at the moment, despite a few foibles, it seems it is the most consistent and closest indicator as to how fast we are actually going.

Have you actually read any of the posts properly?

Nobody has said they are going to contest using satnav!

And you are talking tosh about speedos being more accurate..............

Really?

Yes I have read the posts properly and didnt say he was going to do that, please read my post properly eh?

Secondly your kinda shooting yourself in foot foot with your spout off about modern speedo's. I said they were more accurate, you said maybe more consistant. Consistency over distance is going to make them more accurate, hence manufacturers having to properly alter speedo's to overread slightly now, they never all used to.

Being a vehicle examiner Ive spoken to several manufactures, here and abroad, and yes they all say that speedo's are far more accurate nowadays using speed pulse generators etc.

But hey, what a load of tosh right?

it wouldnt matter if you were upside down, a satalite navigation receiver is accurate, in fact the faster you go the more accurate it becomes. On my yacht our satnav will only give an accuracy without GMDS of about 20 meters providing the speed of the boat is a minmum of 8 knots, or about 11 MPH. an aircraft that goes at about 500 knots has an acuracy of about 15cm's. the computer caulates the SOG or speed over the ground several hundred times a sec. and as the sat's are at know altitudes and relative velocity (they are geo staionary) it is quite a simple feat to calculate with extream accuracy the distance and hence speed over the ground. it is a myth that a GPS is told IT'S position by the sat in the sky. all the sat does is to transmit a constant signal of here i am, this is the time i sent this msg and this is my sat id. It's is your satnav that does all the calcs. so I would be 98% certain that if your satnavsays your doing 52MPH then you are doing 52MPH with a margin of error of about 2 percent. and if i am wrong then i would get Steven Hawkins to go to court and baffle the judge with bull****. As for spedo accuracy, mine a MB T202 is also electroinic with pulses and I dunno what, but it is allways and I mean ALLWAYS reading faster than i am acctualy going. to date I allways set my cruise on a 50 limit on the motorway at 52 MPH taken from the TomTom, the speed is averaged out over the distance if the cams are working, to date Ihaven't had a single ticket, even though my speedo says I'm doing 55. And I agree with Neilos, A sped limit is a speed limit it has been imposed for a reason, not so you as a sensable road use should go on your merry way and ignore it, then complain when you do get caught. Think about all the times you have broken the limit and got away with it.

GPS satellites aen't geostationary. They orbit at an altitude of about about 12,550 miles, which is just over half way to being geostationary (22,236 miles).

I think one of the biggest issues here is that many drivers believe that the limits are now completely arbitrary and do not reflect modern cars or driving styles.
