I'm after software (preferably free!) to catalog my CD and DVD collection. I thought about a simple Access or Excel database but would rather a more refined package.

Ideally I would like to simply insert a disc in the pc and allow it to create the entry and populate it with the details, track/cover art/artist etc etc..

Any recommendations? Thanks! :)

Thanks grober, I found that as a possible but was hoping someone might have used this or similar and could recommend something.

I get a bit paranoid about downloading trial stuff and then having to uninstall.

Is it just the info you're after storing of the content too?

Just the info, artist, song title, artwork etc.. Not looking to digitise it all, I use iTunes for loading into my iPhone those songs I want ;)

It's not freeware, but take a look at the Music Collector/Movie/Book Collector software. Music Collector Features and Screenshots

I'm considering getting this to finally get my CD/DVD/book collections under control, having tried and failed to keep up with logging them manually in Excel. The big advantage is that it supports barcode recognition (for which you also need a USB barcode scanner), which means a large collection can be catalogued far more quickly than if you had to load/unload each disc individually.

The support for mobile apps is also a godsend, as it means you have access to your collection when you're browsing in HMV, etc. (I've lost count of the number of times I've bought a DVD and then found I already had it, but maybe that's just me...)

Apart from the initial outlay (a modest £16 per program, plus the cost of the scanner), the only downside I can see is that there is no single, integrated solution that will handle all types of media.

MOCAS, I short listed that software as well. As you say no integrated solution but I'm thinking it should be too onerous.
