Compared to the petrol sixes these feel quite underpowered, are there any tried and tested routes to improve this engines output?

Replace it with a bigger engine..

No other sensible means.

Apart from that? What about normal tuning, filter/exhaust cylinder head mods?

I'm not sure it would be a very pleasant car, these mods tend to make a car more revvy and peaky which is counter to the character of the w124, I suspect a free flow exhaust and performance filter would help, but any serious modding of the engine is going to be more expensive than buying a reasonable 6 cylinder car. I had a Volvo Amazon tuned with polished ports etc, 4 branch manifold, straight through exhaust, lightened flywheel and big carbs and it flew, however, try keeping it under 30mph and it was a total pig, narrow power band and no low down performance.

The only thing that can be improved on a 230 without spending a stack of money is the exhaust, even then you can only gain perhaps 10hp.

The only sensible cost efective option is to fit the 3.0 m103 engine and loom, but then you may as well buy a six cylinder coupe to begin with.

Forget it. Just accept it for what it is and enjoy it. If you want the 6 cylinder power and smoothness there is no shortcut other than buying one.

SUPERCHARGING would be a distinct possibility which could yield a lot more "off the line" torque but there are no "kits" available. You would have to research and built it yourself which would be a fascinating project and you would end up with a unique car . Various supercharger supply companies could help here at a price- would be talking a 4 figure sum though!
