Changing engine oil on a W124

I'd like to change the oil on my 300TE-24 estate, but there is a big metal cover under the engine, and I can't see how to remove it

I did think of using a pipe to syphon it out through the dipstick hole, but I'd really like to drain it properly.

Looks like it's going to be a PITA to change the oil then

Maybe I'll get a garage to do it.

Does anyone hire out something that would suck out the oil?

Sounds you have a rare MB steel sumpguard. Watch out - they weigh a lot more than you think!

yeah, i've got one of these on the estate.... really heavy!

what i do is lay underneath the car and use my knee to support it up in position as i remove the 4 bolts.

all 13mm sized

one on each side of the heavy metal guard - on the end of one of the "pipe" looking things, that arnt actually pipes at all. use a 13mm socket and a spanner to undo.

and then one at each side at the rear directly upwards. use a 13mm socket with extension bar to get to these.

i found it easier to remove the front bolts 1st, then do the rears, but i guess you could do it either way. its certainly easier to re-assemble rear 1st, then front.

derek

I have just bought and used one of these to do my engine gearbox and rear axle and they are absolutely brilliant.

How does it work? Do you pump the oil up the dip stick tube? it certainly seems a better idea than getting under the car.

The one i have was bought from Screwfix, works by creating a vacuum in the storage container and just sucks the oil up. Oil needs to be fairly hot or it takes a long time. Yes the tube goes into the dipstick hole. Problem is you cant remove the deposits in the base of the sump (carbon etc unless it is suspended in the oil).

personally, i would drain it properly, rather than sucking it out of the dipstick tube.

its not that much hassle to take off the undertray once you know where all the bolts are etc.

>>personally, i would drain it properly,

There's nothing at all improper about sucking the oil out. As long as the oil is hot, it will flow freely, and sufficient of the impurities will be in suspension.

However you change the oil, you can't change the oil that's in the oil galleries, or the oil cooler. So, it's never a complete "change" anyway!

What about the oil in the torque converter - does it get that out too? How much oil are you guys removing/replacing when you use a pump?

I seem to recall changing the oil without removing the sump guard last time.. Am I imagining this? (its highly probable given the muggy conditions...)

You're confusing changing the engine oil (there's no engine oil in the torque convertor), with changing the gearbox oil.

On earlier cars, there is another drain plug, to allow transmission oil to be drained from the torque convertor, which is usually done at part of the same job of draining the transmission oil out of the gearbox sump, and replacing the gearbox oil filter.

You will get oil left in the oil cooler, various other places etc but the simple fact is that you will get more crap, dirt particles out of the engine by draining it.

For the time it takes, draining it is the best way imo.

Dave!

Personally, I think you'll always have some bits left in the sump whichever way you do it. The only way to get it all out would be to remove the sump.

Not to be cavalier about it, but the Oil filter should take care of any deposits. As long as you change it regularly you should be fine.
