I recently bought a 2002 C270 CDI and want to upgrade the old, worn black pastic keys I currently have for the newer chrome keys.

Could anyone please offer some advice as to how to go about this?

Many thanks :)

you need to go into a dealer and order the new key.. its about £140 +

apparently MB have today changed their checklist of things they need before they sell you a key, im waiting for a call back as i want an ignition barrel for my sec so will let you know what they say...

Get in contact with your local MB dealer i would imagine. You'll need your V5 as well. I've just got a new chrome one- very nice!! :)

As you can only order this from a MB dealer, you will need the Log book and some ID, you must ask them if it will be the new type key. Make this point clear that you want the chrome one

Excellent....thank you for your help. I'll investigate with local MB dealerships

I ordered mine on Friday last week. Should be here Friday this week. They needed my V5, utility bill in my name, and my driving licence. Cost just over £150 including the blade. When I collect on Friday I will need to bring in my car so the key can be coded. I did make sure it would be the chrome one. He assured me that they were only giving out chrome ones from now on.

This is the checklist I was given recently by MB Chelsea service department. Got my key in France in the end....

I wonder if MB are putting all the old ones on Ebay :D:D

Hope Pluggers wont mind me using his pictures for show.

I like the chrome key but I am finding it difficult justifying to myself spending £150, which is highly unusual as normally if I see something I want I just buy it! :)

Yep...its a lot of money to start the car :)

I understand that this type of key is being used for Keyless go now, with the old card you got 2 cards and 2 keys, now you just get the 2 keys

150 quid may be a lot for a key, but it looks SO much better than the old one! Go on.....spoil yourselves!

some of the older black ones were also used for keyless on the high end cars... its only the casing after all..

the CL600 was a 2001, that had the card... i was referring to an S class i had a while back, think that was an 04 or maybe 54..

I read somewhere that if you claim to have lost one of your original keys the dealer will give you a new one for free (the first time). This happened to one of the members on this (or another) forum - He was lucky and got the new chrome key.
Does anyone know if this is global MB policy or only for that specific dealer?
